Default 54 Mercury 256 question-engine

How difficult is it to remove the oil pump assembly with the engine in the car??? It is difficult to reinstall the drive rod intro the engine or does it come out when the pump is removed??

Well, you need to read your SHOP MANUAL very closely and gather the parts you need beforehand.

Why do you need a pump?

I'm trying to find an oil leak. Wanted to clean the pump and install new gaskets. Clean area around the pump as well.

... whew ...

Tall order ...

How bad is the bottom rear of the engine? It it covered in oil?

I would start with a quarter car-wash blasting. You would then scrape and clean with brake cleaner until you can see the area fully. You have to ID the source of the leak(s) first.

Usually, it will be the oil filter adapter plate being warped and leaking, blowing back. I would only remove the pump if the mounting gasket needs replacement. And then again, it may be the rear seal.

You will have to loosen up the tube that runs from the pan to the pump at the pan and undo/remove the sealing nut that holds the tube to the pump. Then just remove the bolts that hold the pump to the block. And I think you should replace the seal with a new one rather than reuse the old one.

As for the the drive rod, it should not be a problem to reinstall but you may have to fiddle with it a little to get it inserted in the distributor.

If you don't have a Shop manual, I strongly advise getting one . I assume this is covered.
