Default The FORD Script and exporting

The "FORD Script" and exporting...

Ford removed the "FORD" script on most Model A parts for "exporting" purposes sometime in 1928 I think.

Does anyone know just what the reasoning was behind this action?

Was it due to taxes?

Who knows?

I wonder if perhaps they hadn't secured the trademark on the logo in all of the relevant countries yet and didn't want to risk legal trouble.

That sounds possible. There have been many US companies try to set up here only to find "their" name already in use. For example, did you know that at one stage, MacDonalds was in the hardware/lumber business? Back when they came to set up here, they found the name was registered and in use in Tasmania. A family hardware and timber business was operating under that name and had been for many years so the hamburger chain couldn't operate there under that name. Eventually, the business came up for sale and guess who bought it. They stripped the name from it and sold it on but in the mean time, they sold hardware and timber.
We do not have Burger King in this country. Although I don't know for sure but I suspect that name is in use by another business. No burger King but we do have Hungry Jack's with the same logo as BK.
Maybe Ford was aware of the potential problems if the name were registered elsewhere and they tried to use it.

A very logical suggestion.

There was an old pub in Blackball NZ that was called the Hilton. Had been for about 100 years or so, i'm told.
They changed the name to former Hilton to avoid a legal rangle.

Good point. Maybe it happened when they started exporting knock-down kits and parts to the Soviets. Everywhere else, they were built as Fords, but the Soviets branded them as NAZ/GAZ, so they wouldn’t have wanted Ford-branded parts.

Here is an era magazine ad from Russia for the Ford Model A.......clearly with the Ford script on the ad.....obviously no attempt to hide the fact that it was an imported Ford car:

Once the Russians stopped assembling the imported Ford Model A's, instead sourcing/making the parts locally, they changed to the NAZ then GAZ name.
