Hood hinges - tube or rod?
My local vendor stocks a set of stainless tubes for the hood hinges. For the same price I could buy solid stainless rod. Which is better?

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?
An old trick back in the day was to stick a brazing rod in there. If would go with something solid for sure.

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?
Here are some original hood rods. The top rod behind the radiator cap is a seamed 3/8" OD steel tube. The side rods are a solid 1/4" steel. The upper rod is difficult to remove without damaging. All these you see are beyond repair. Bent into a corkscrew or bent/crimped over at the ends. Whether you go with a solid or tubular upper rod, if something heavy comes down on your hood, it won't matter which you use.
A straight piece of 5/16" ID (3/8"OD) brake line is a pretty close fit for a top rod. But in the long run, a stainless rod won't ever rust. |

Think I'll go for rods, thanks for the input. Got wood dowel holding it together right now!

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?
Where do you find a brazing rod that thick? ⅜" for the center rod I believe? Thanks.

There are 3 places in a Model-A where this rolled tubing is used. Wanna take a guess where the other two places are>>

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?
Tubes are stronger Learned this working on hydraulic rods and tubes ,more surface area to bend makes it stronger with less weight.

Re: Hood hinges - tube or rod?
Lubricate your old rods in the hood. Then punch them out a bit. Connect a drill motor to them to spin them as you pull them out. Makes the process a lot easier.

Thirty or 40 years ago my dearly departed uncle wisened me to that procedure. I must have passed it on to 100 people by now.
