Default Cross Sectional cut of iron head thickness.

Looking for a photo and, or measurement of the thickness of a 8BA iron head across the dome portion of the combustion chamber. I'd rather not have to cut one if that info is available elsewhere. Perhaps from a Ford print?

Thank you

A quick sonic test would give you the thickness any good auto machine shop should be able to do that measurement.

I have a cut through 8ba head on my wall,it came from our dragster, the cast thickness i will measure today,BUT is one of the nicest uniform castings I have seen, about 1/4 -5/16 thick.

The thickness above the combustion chamber is ..250 in and the thickness on the top of the head is .187
This is an 8ba 8rt head

Lawrie, that is perfect! Wonder how much can be taken off the dome area before it blows up?

Well, that one has completely cracked all around the chamber, but it came off the dragster that had 22 psi boost in and timing wrong.

I had flat piston 21 stud heads modified for dome top pistons. You can do it with cast iron heads but not aluminum.

So, the cross-sectional cut photo is of the head that succumbed to the 22 boost?
The engine I'm contemplating will have no boost. Do you suppose a stock iron head can survive with 1/16" less thickness over the piston? I'm thinking it will in a street motor.

I'm sure it would be strong enough, but the temperature difference s between the thin and thicker portion of the combustion chamber would be prone to cracking.

I would assume near the water jackets. The head gets hot, the water cools. Especially under hi loading of the engine
