Default Reds Headers

My Question, I am looking at the header system from Reds Headers and propose to use the tube header that is made for the stock intake for the model A. Can I still use my engine pan on that side. I will use a stock intake bored to B carb and currenty run a C head and water pump on a engine from a old miller welder. Thanks in Advance for the help.

As far as I know Jim at Reds can not find a welder and is not making headers. You could call and check.

Hey john,
Interesting comment regarding Reds and (not) having a 'welder'.
I just purchased a 'Reds' tube header , at the Pomona Swap Meet' , a couple weeks ago.
The young man that I bought the header from, had apparently tried to run this header and gave up. I bought the fairly unused header cheap, as the guy knew that he had problems, but didn't know and/or want to say what the problem was.
I looked the header over, and noticed that 'someone/welder had welded all four pipes ....a quarter inch out of the backside...where mated to block !

I took the header home and used grinder and belt sander to flatten and fit to block. Nice piece of equipment ...now. Oh , and I ground and took off the little Reds Header plate that was attached, since I now was the 'maker', eh

FYI; as of this past Friday, when I called asking about a header for myself, the guy that answered the phone said they had none, were currently not building any, and that I should check back again this Fall. I know that by then I will have acquired all the items needed to fabricate my own header, and I know it will be better too.

"MAYBE" on his mock up block, the welder let the pipes extend into the counterbores for the alignment RINGS???

If it's like the one I have, it is also welded on the back side. I didn't grind mine down to far because it's not welded on the front side. I spaced the intake ports with some thick gaskets to level it with the exhaust ports.

Not sure what is going on with Red's but by the sound of things.....it isn't good!

I tried to buy a set of his flathead V8 headers a few months ago and he told me he had no employees? Didn't know when he would?

Sent me a email the next day saying 2 of his men got into a fight and had to fire them, was looking for a new wielder, when He got back on track he would call me,I guess he never got back on track! (also did not charge on my credit card) Pete

Wont go into detail but had a similar experience last week...two separate orders...no parts in stock.

Angry Re: Reds Headers

I had ordered headers in March for a V8 Flathead. Jim send me this answer:
"We are out of stock on these headers. Due to problems with employees, we are not sure when we will be in a position to make more. The soonest we could make more headers will be at least 8 weeks."

End of may I asked again if there are any news regarding my order. His answer was: "We are still not able to make headers. We are working on a solution that may allow us to begin production again in the next month or so."

I had dealt with Jim a few times and I didn't had any problems with delivery time or anything. It seems that he has serious problems to find a solution. He didn't charge anything on my credit card until today

I'm still waiting for my order. I hope that he found a solution otherwise I'll cancel my order.

Why is it so hard to find a competent welder?

He's located in Thousand Palms which is north of the resort cities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Qinta, and Indian Wells. Mostly wealthy retired people in the area. Not too many welders live there except maybe a few in Indio. It's about a sixty or seventy mile drive from the Riverside - San Bernardino area where I live. Not too many wwelders could afford to drive out there with $4 a gallon gas prices. Maybe he could farm out the work to a shop in our area.

Today I got all 3 packages with t (Header, Smithys, extension and tailpipes) The Headers are look goo. The right one fits like a glove, while the left one causes some problems. Due to the fact ´that I have bolts instead of screws that nut don't fit. I have to remove the bolt and then it worked.

Allen head bolts work well where a socket won't fit.

Been trying to contact Red's for the past several days... I had called them about three weeks ago and was told they had plain steel exhaust for a '40 from header to tail pipe... but now no one answers the phone and I get a "message gh35" whatever the hell that means!
