Default It RUNS ....and then it DIES....

Hello to all....

Pictured for my '36 Ford pickup is ALL NEW, the 16 gallon (Galvanized) fuel tank, fuel tank vent, fuel filter, electric fuel pump, fuel pressure gauge (set at 2 1/2 PSI), original style glass bowl type fuel pump (that I gutted and only run fuel through, because I like the looks of it) and Super 97 carburetor. Reason I send this is because about 1 1/2 weeks ago I started and warmed up my pickup to take about a 6 mile drive. Ran fine and drove for about 4 1/2 miles then just died when I pulled up to a stop sign. Sat on side of road for about 5 minutes, pumped the gas pedal about 10 times then pickup started back up. Ran about 1 mile (2 blocks from home) then died again. Sat for another 5 minutes, pumped the gas pedal about 10 times then started up and drove home. I thought that I had run out of gas in the tank (my fuel gauge is not hooked up yet) so added 10 more gallons of gas. Took the same driving route and pickup ran fine all the way back home with no issues. Last Saturday 11/14 I started and warmed up my '36 pickup, drove about 1 1/2 miles then it dies again. My '36 pickup only has 59 miles on it since ALL NEW items were added. I am looking for your thoughts, comments and advice on what you think is going on, I suspect the electric fuel pump (even though new).

It could be an ignition problem, either the coil and the capacitor may be breaking down with heat.

Same problem here on two different engines. It was coil on both.

Very clean looking install but I believe that the fuel pump should be mounted much lower as they don't pull very well.

Is that fuel pump designed to be mounted higher than the fuel tank? When you drive around, and the fuel moves, so that the fuel pipe in the tank "sees" air, is that pump able to self prime?

Try it again and if it dies look down carb throat to see if you are getting fuel. This will narrow down problem.

THANK YOU to all that have replied.

a) I did have my helmet style distributor converted over to electronic ignition but utilizing original style Coil when I converted from 6 Volt positive ground to 12 Volt negative ground.
b) You are correct that the electric fuel pump should be mounted below the gas tank. It is not self priming and I looked on SPEEDWAY MOTORS catalog and it says "pusher style pump, requires gravity feed". I will remount then try the drive again.

Not sure what coil resistance is required with the modification, but if it was a points ignition it would require a ballast resistor, the absence of which would overheat the coil. But, no idea with an electronic pickup.

I would suggest running a mechanical pump and use the electric pump to prime. I would forget the pressure regulator. I am assuming that the mechanical pump can pull thru the electric pump. I run a mechanical pump pulling thru an electric and no regulator - no problems. I use a Fascet electric pump which looks like the Bendix of the past.
I do not think your electric pump is mounted too high. It has to be pumping fuel or you not go as far as you do. You have electronic ignition and hence no condenser, but is the coil getting to hot? Is it mounted on the motor? Perhaps it could be mounted in a cooler place. I have had that experience on several occasions and remounting the coil in a cooler place solved the problem.

Check current draw thru ign.circuit,should be around 2.5 amps, to much and coil will run to hot,

Runs, quits, wait a bit, runs again. Repeats whenever it wants. Everything is new....

Sealed gas cap starving the system of fuel been put on the list yet?

chances are when you put the pump in the correct spot it'll be fine.
VT vented was noted.

If you have one of those pressure regulators with the dial on it I would remove it from the system. Then see how it reacts. Had similar symptoms in a car and it turned out to be the regulator.

Might be a good investment to purchase a higher quality pressure regulator, lots of reports of issues with the round dial ones. May not be related to the current issue, but still might be a good idea to change it out. I've had good luck with the Holly 12-804, 1-4 psi units, they are around $35.

THANK YOU to all of you that have replied. This is all good information and gives me things to look at on a one by one basis. I will start by lowering the electric fuel pump first then try a longer drive. I will let you all know back what it took to get it a reliable driving '36 Ford pickup again. It will be several months from now before I can try because last Saturdays drive (that it quit running for me) was to the auto body shop for paint and install of the bed and rear fenders. Luckily the auto body shop is only about 2 miles away from my house. At that time I will send some more photos of the finished pickup.

Hello,

a) drolston....Gas Filler Cap and Gas Tank are both vented.
b) tubman....I will definitely let you all know back my findings once I have it figured out.

I am not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me but I can only see one fuel hose on that electric pump from the filter bowl but the other side of the pump appears to have no fuel hose on it, only a brass fitting ??? Regards, Kevin.

You are correct, photo was taken before fuel line was installed onto electric fuel pump.
