Default Steering box bottom tube seal?

I am thinking of making some of the steering box end plates with the brass tubes to retain the lube in the early boxes. I can make the two hole and the four hole styles. The horn rod will go thru them. Any interest? Maybe $25??

Are you going to crimp the bottom as original? or solder?

The Model A one will not fit in a 32 and later steering shaft

I am planing a jig so the plate is square and have room to solder both sides. I could start a flare and then flatten it for more area. I think a good solder job would be fine.

If you need any of the brass tubes I had some made to the exact size as originals years ago.

Hey Andy,
I just saw your post. I have a 37 pickup and the steering tube was stuck in mine and is now shot and thus I am in need of new one.
I’d be interested in one if you happen to have another?

I thought I had the right dimension tubes but I don't. If you are willing to run a drill bit up the steering shaft, I can fix you up. The drill would need an extension added on but the drill would only need to be 1/32 over the stock 3/8. The horn rod could also be filed to take off a few thousants. I have two differeny dimenion tubes. One bigger and one smallert
I need to contact 35fordtn

Do you think solider is good enough ? May be a light braze or a silver solider. JMHO

Silver solder is what I had used back when I made a batch several years ago

I have a steering box seal for the 1932 steering box and the dimensions are different than the one for the Model A. When I found out that they were no longer available I had contemplating making a few. My local hobby shop has a rack of KS, Brass Tubing that I thought I could use. It turns out that I couldn't find the correct size tubing. I measured the one I have now and the O.D. of the tubing is .420 and the inside bore is .390/.392. When I researched the cost of a custom run of the correct size brass tubing, it made it cost prohibitive, so I gave up on the idea. Silver Solder was the way I would join the brass tubing to the steel flange.

Several years ago I needed this tube for my 34 BB truck, so I called the Early Ford Store in San Dimas, CA. IIRC Michael crossed referenced the part number with a model A part number (I don't know which year) and found them to be the same, so he sent it. It fit and is working fine.

Andy,
As I had to destroy mine to get it out and I have no other alternatives I would be willing to attempt to modify the bigger one you have to make it work. Would you be willing to part with one?

I would be happy to try to fix you up. Do you need a two hole or a four hole plate?
The bigger tube measures up to fit. The shafts are not smooth inside any more. A strip of sandpaper on a piece of wire and turned on a drill would clean one up. I can put the bigger tubes in all the shafts and turn them by hand. There is just a little drag. It would never be noticed in service. The horn rods fit with no problem in the bigger tubes.
FYI, the horn rods are not round. The repo rods are bigger in diameter.

Andy,
Since I last posted I have happened upon an NOS steering tube with plate for $25.
I appreciate your attention to this matter however and if for some reason this one does not work out I’ll get back to you.
Thanks again.

I guess my personal opinion is....if someone is going to go to the trouble of reproducing a needed part for these Early Fords, it should be at least equal to, or better than the original part in quality, fit and function. The customer should not have to drill, sand, file or otherwise modify anything in any way to make it fit. JMO

Andy I have the tubing somewhere from when I used to make them. It had to be custom made as the original tubing is a very special not common size. The only reason for us not making them anymore is the laser cutter place I used to make the plates went out of business, and they weren’t a big enough seller for me to source another place. Since I have tubing that I have a lot of money in I had considered making them again but don’t want to step on toes of someone else looking to make them
