Default pops, slips, drops out of second gear

I have a "rebuilt" transmission that was won in a raffle. Please read all of this message before responding. When I put it in my car it popped out of second gear when going up hills. Usually when I would back off the accelerator. This was not just a "slip out of gear". If I put my hand on the shift knob and tried to hold it in gear it took considerable force to hold it in gear. I have since removed it from the car and have taken it apart. The tower plungers and springs are OK. I did swap out the tower with one that did not pop out of gear and it still popped out. Thus the problem is NOT in the tower. The bearings are sealed and appear to be new. The gears do not appear to have any pits or wear. Shims were used between the engine and the housing. What else should I check?

It was a freshly rebuilt engine. I did not rebuild the engine so I can not say for sure that there was a new pilot bearing. But it looked new.

Hi Bob,

my car had exactly the same problem. Much tried: New shift forks, tower rails, shiftin' balls and springs, thick ATF oil. The problem didn't go back. The cause was an inclined plane on the teeth of the cluster.

What Werner found with his can be spotted pretty easy if you know what too look for..the actual top of the tooth bears witness to taper..the top should be 'square' equal width across the tooth..if the top of the tooth shows a taper it's worn,it amount of taper shows extent..

Here are some pictures of the gears. The top two pictures are the cluster gear. Then last two are the second gear.

You have eliminated the tower / forks / detents etc by swapping the tower.

My guess would be either some poor quality repro gears, or too much clearance in the sliding gears on the main shaft.

The attached article was written a number of years ago and covers most of the reasons that a Model A transmission jumps out of gear.

The only new addition is the redesigned off-shore roller bearings that have a service life of 300 - 500 miles that are now the only ones available.

Tom,
Have you heard anything regarding better bearings under development or soon to be available?
Thanks

Good Day!

The gears are labeled "MARK USA". Are these gears good or bad quality?

Bert's did have some of the "Good Bearings" (not the ones that are advertised in the catalog). I bought a set some months ago, 'just in case'. I don't know if they are still available, give Steve a call.

I always heard that the MARC gears were good (I have no first-hand experience using anything but original gears). But you still might have too much play with the gears on the main shaft.
Several posters have mentioned their experience with main and throwout bearing quality.
The article referenced has pretty much identified all causes of sliding out of gear... but you have eliminated several of those by swapping the tower.

MARK gears are the best in my opinion next to original Ford ones. I have them in my case and they work well. Even with good new gears the fit on shafts need to be checked during assembly. I had to get a second main shaft to solve this same problem. The mechanics service bulletins address this.
