Generator

While my 1936 Ford was running disconnected battery cable 1 side and engine stop running. Original Generator seems to show charging however engine dies with one side of battery removed. What would be the cause that the Generator doesn’t keep supplying a voltage when 1 side of battery is disconnected? Thanks

If you did this at idle the generator isn´t charging...

If you have the original 3 brush generator without a voltage regulator that
generator can put out up to 40 volts when disconnected from the battery.
The battery is what regulates the voltage in the stock 3 brush generator.

For info only1 I drove my first car 1932 Tudor home with out a battery. Started it with a 6 volt battery from the farm 9n and pulled the throttle out & put tractor back in tractor and parked it back in the barn and drove the car home without a license or registration !! It can work . kx

You were lucky, doesn't always turn out that way. See paragraph two

Interesting thread.

So you can't run a pre-war ford off generator only. Thought it was so. RPMs a factor too.


Wouldn't make sense to be able to start the engine off the crank otherwise. Not that I've made it happen with a charging generator and the battery disconnected.
