Where to put Tools for the Tudor
How do you carry your tools around? Many Model Ts had no door on one side of the car so it was a great place to mount a running board toolbox. Cannot really do that on a Model A Tudor. I'm thinking of buying the 20"x6" toolbox shown below but where to put it? There's also a 16" version. It's either inside the car or mount it to a rear luggage rack I guess. Or...?

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
Exactly what tools do you need? The next question is what are you carrying under the rear seat?
I offen suggest to carrry the same tools as you do in your daily driver. If someone feels the urge for tools, replicate the tools Ford supplied when the vehicle was new. If someone feels they must carry more, then I usually suggest working on the car with the tools in your garage so there is no need to take tools with you. Even a Model-T does not need a tool box. I have completed many a week-long tour in one of my Ts and never put a wrench on it the entire week. |

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
When doing longer trips in my Tudor, I have a tool box on the luggage rack. I've seen flat tool boxes on the luggage rack under the trunk, even a pull out tray (secured so it won't open while you're driving) under the running board or under the rack.
Mine is a driver car, not a show car so I've put a box under the floor behind the front seat on the LHS (passenger side) of the car. Then there are those boxes that fit between the dumb irons in front of the radiator. Most of those are ugly though IMO. Sounds like you are close to enjoying your car!

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
Brent, I agree...... I don’t typically take a modern tool kit unless I’m on a tour or something with our group.. and I always say that’s because it’s for someone else ‘s car that I might have to fix!!! The underneath of the tudor back seat actually has a lot of room in it and you can store things behind the back seat rear as well.
Keep it simple if you include light kit and if you want to take the kitchen sink you have room on the open floor somewhere behind the front seats. The key is doing whatever needs to be done to the car at home in the garage so that when you get on the road you don’t have any issues as it’s in too shape. By doing that and knowing you car it makes touring so much more pleasurable. Larry |

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
I found myself an ammunition box and it fits perfectly between the front bumper irons, level with the top of the bumper. Just shortened the crank handle a tad. Its lockable and very handy there, even use it as a seat.

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
yes, the running boards are useful for everything. Our Tudor is kitted out for serious touring -pic attached. Tent can be strapped to one running board, 2 gallon extra fuel and oil cans towards the front of each running board, ammo box for tools and a further box with a supplementary battery. Also front box behind bumper, "tudor basement" ( are these still available?) under rear floor board, and rear trunk. - Trouble is, stuff accumulates to fill the space available

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
I have seen a large metal storage unit that goes under the rear floorboard advertised by some of the vendors. I don't have time to search for a link right now. Anyone have a link? Chap

This is what I have https://www.brattons.com/metal-tool-box.html works great. The only thing I didn’t do yet was to drill a hole for the crank

Re: Where to put Tools for the Tudor
Instead of a tool box, I use a heavy canvas bag. Fits under the seat of the roadster and conforms to available space. Don't need it very often but it has come in handy a couple times. And yes, I carry tools in my modern pickup as well

Thanks everyone for your replies. Some have pointed to the under the back seat option. There is room there but it's an inconvenient place to put stuff if you want quick and easy access; plus, if you are working on the car and have dirty or grease covered hands do you want to have to climb into the car and start handling the upholstery? A luggage rack seems to me a better way to go. A lower cost option is that $20 toolbox at the top or a canvas bag placed on the rear floor.

Like that style bag. HD has them on sale cheap occasionally too. Use them for tools, fishing tackle, camera crap, random orbital buffer and pads, all kinds of stuff. |
