Default 1939 floor mat

I just received my new floor mat from Dennis Carpenter. It's very good quality! My question is about a shift boot. When I bought my coupe a few years ago, it came with a shift boot, and that mat was fairly butchered to make the opening around the boot. Is the boot a correct, original piece? Or is it just an add-on? I've seen photos of supposedly restored cars with and without the boot.
