292/312 engines
What models got the 312 engine in 56? Was it an option?
Thanks Jim |

Re: 292/312 engines
Mercury's, and it was an optional engine in '56 Thunderbird's.
A 312 may have also been put in some Police cars as the 'Police Interceptor' engine. Later in that model year it would have been available as an option in other Fords. Are you trying to figure out which engine you've got? http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm You can't ID a 312 engine from the outside. http://ford-y-block.com/identify312.htm . Re: 292/312 engines
I heard that very few '56 sedans/hardtops/convertibles actually got the 312, maybe something on the order of 15 or 16 thousand.

DMSFFR
Thanks for the list Now, if I find ECK or EDB-A on the block# can I assume that it's a 56 engine? This all very confusing to a flathead Ford guy Not sure my old brain can take this all in Jim |

Re: 292/312 engines
When these old engines are for sale, they are ALL 312s.

Re: 292/312 engines
Other than the change in displacement, what else is different/advantageous to a 312?
Better heads? Different camshaft? Obviously a bit more power. Just wondering Jim |

Re: 292/312 engines
.....and a block that likes to show cracks around the main bolts from overtorque and not enough material due to larger main bearing diameter. The best 312 I've seen or had has been built off a late 292 block.

I agree. If you want the best 312, start with a late 292 block. Get a 312 crankshaft and have the main bearing journals turned down to the 292 size. Sal |
