Doing an oil change
Just doing an oil/filter change on my 53. Should I fill the oil filter canister with oil first? I had to suck quite a bit of dirty black oil out of there
Thanks Ian |

No. You'll end up with a big oily mess.

Re: Doing an oil change
i always do, dont want any old oil with junk going back into the engine, thats why i change the oil in the first place, to get rid of that crap, use a sucksion gun to get left over oil out of filter, wipe it clean, put filter in then fill the cannister with oil slowly, let the oil flow into filter, that way the engine doesnt hve to wait to long for oil to build pressure at the crank and things, full flow or not it still takes time for the filter to fill

Re: Doing an oil change
On my '40 I just drain everything and clean out and wipe the inside of canister then put in the filter. Add oil and good to go.
No leaks and I change every 1,500 miles each year. Mike |

Re: Doing an oil change
why does Ford say to use 5 quarts of oil when mine shows full at four? I always use five as it doesn't seem to cause any problems. But why the disparity?

Re: Doing an oil change
Oil is bypassed into the filter at a slower rate with the restrictor in the inlet line. It flows through the filter at a reduced rate then goes right back into the pan. You can put oil in there if you want but a lot of it will drain back into the pan over a period of time. The best policy is to fill to the full mark on the OEM dip stick. Some engines take 5 quarts and some don't so care has to be taken not to overfill. FoMoCo never used a full pressure filtration system in that era. If you want one, you have to modify a lot to get one to work and even then, the rear main will still be unfiltered straight out of the oil pump.
