Default Electric Windshield Wiper Motor Needed

I have a ’36 5 window with dual wiper blades on it. The car is 12 volt and not judged. I had the vacuum wiper motor rebuild. It works great til I put the wiper blades on. I checked the vacuum 15 inches. I put RainX on the windows. I know it works great for everyone else, but I could not tell the difference between where I put it on and where I didn’t, and I could hardly see through the drops.

I tried the little electric motor from Drake, $65. It says right on it, “Not for Dual Wipers” and it has a VERY tiny motor. There should be a way to substitute a bigger motor for it that will adapt to the spiral drive.

There has to be some workable substitute besides a string. Anyone figured out a solution? I have looked at the 12v used for the CJ5 Jeep, I would have to cut a hole in the windshield hinge cover. Not completely opposed to that but wanted to see what others have done before I do that.

Yes, I know, Don’t Drive in the Rain.

Going to follow this one. I also need to improve mine on my 38 and would like to see how you resolve the issue.

With my 35, [with dual wipers] I went to a local wrecking yard and bought a rear windscreen wiper motor out of a small Jap hatchback [I 'think' it was a Ford Laser]. Thing is, they sweep through 120 degrees, and have a shallow profile to fit within the constraints of the rear hatch, so fit in behind the header. I did have to open the hole for the wiper tower a wee bit, but now I have good wipers! Go check out your local wrecking yard.
There is some outfit over your country called 'mighty wiper'...dunno about them. Here in the colonies we tend to be creative. lol

Check with aftermarket wiper manuf. One makes a remote motor, like mounted behind the pass. side kick panel, that uses a cable to drive the wipers. Newport eng.?

Sorry Steve, no I have no photos. I did this conversion years ago and it's tucked up hidden by the header. Looking at your photo, sort of jogs my memory that perhaps I shortened up the tower? As I stated earlier, I remember I had to open up the dia of the hole in the roof a tad. Have you investigated the 'mighty wiper'?

Brian,
Yes, I have the Not So "mighty wiper". That is the 2nd, 3rd and 4th photos above. I have been looking at the inner net to see if there is a larger motor that I can adapt to the mighty wiper base.

Some of the Brit sports cars use a remote mounted wiper motor with cable to the wiper shaft(s) - here's a link to parts diagram:

I bought a MGB setup off eBay but never got around to installing.
You put the motor in driver kick panel or under the dash and run the drive cable up to the header panel.

I know Moss Motors/XKs Unlimited pretty good from my Jaguar days. Problem with any kind of cable drive is, there is no room. In the '36, all the room there is, is above the windshield, about 2 inches deep, 6 inches wide.

I hope to roam the junk yards this weekend and look for something with a hatch back that has a wiper motor.

Thanks for the thought. Someone has to have solved this problem before now. I can't be the only one with a weak wiper motor.

Mighty wiper works good at slow speeds on my 32 coupe. 60 miles an hour and you have basically nothing.

Newport Engineering makes excellent, easy to install electric wiper motors for old cars. Try them. They may have what you need.

Steve How much spring tension is there on your wiper arms? The reason I ask, is that a previous owner installed a set of wiper arms and blades on my '46 Coupe, that were not original style. The spring tension was too much for the wiper motor to overcome. I changed to stock arms and blades, and the wipers work reasonably well.

You may want to check a marine supply store. Boat wipers ahve various sweeps.

Newport Engineering makes one for a '36 Ford. Not cheap but if its anything like the one I have in my '54 Ranch Wagon you'll be very happy with it.

New Port Engineering | 1935-36 Ford Car (newportwipers.com)

The latest and greatest from New Port Engineering is the 1935-36 Ford Clean Wipe Wiper System. This system is a replacement for the original small vacuum wiper motor. The system comes complete with a heavy duty 2-speed motor, linkage and transmissions, Polished Stainless Steel wiper arms and blades and a drill jig fixture to enlarge the original driver’s side hole and locate and drill the passenger side hole. This kit utilizes New Port Engineering’s time tested designs and is designed to give the most sweep and still look great. 12 volt wiring is required.

I have a 1936 Plymouth streetrod. When I bought it...2 switches for 2 motors. I thought that was weird, but it works just fine. You use your wipers what 2% of the time.....
