Default transmission oil

I know there has been mention of this before but for whatever reason when I do a search I can never get results for the subject I ask for. Going by memory I think it Sta Lube 85E140GL4.
Whats recommended for '46 3 speed .
What description would I put in for a search for that?
There was some Sta Lube that is not recommended

Peruse this thread on gear lube oil. I use 140 as it's hot all year round.

I've noticed that the search quarry is kind of limited on this site but it generally is on most forum sites I visit. I try two use no more and no less than two words for a search string or it doesn't seem to go where I want it to. Two words aren't much of a string but if it's any longer it gets too much information for the engine to be reliable in its findings. Any less and it won't do much. Just an observation. I fully well understand that it isn't google or bing and for the most part I can generally always find what I'm looking for. A person just has to get creative in the search string they use.

Sometimes a person can google what they want and the Ford Barn will come up in the search results and presto, you get what you wanted with a longer search string.

GL1 doesn't have much in the way of pressure additives if any but it will work for light duty. Gl-3 has been obsolete so long that it is hard to find anything meeting that old spec. GL-4 replaced GL-3 for mild EP and is fine for cars and pickups where they aren't the daily work horse. The GL5 is high EP and can eat away at the bushings like the 2nd gear & the reverse idler gear bushings as well as the thrust washer at the back of the case. The blocker rings in the synchro are brass instead of phosphor bronze but it will munch on them a little bit too over time.

Very minor point, but there is no such thing as 140w. "w" stands for winter rating and the highest it goes in gear lube is 85w. The 140 viscosity would be rated at normal temperature. The normal viscosity ratings are at 100 deg C (there are other rating systems, but this is the normal SAE point) and the "w" ratings are at -31 deg C.
