Default New replacement starter motor

Ref: https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/tru...olt-replacemen

The new improved modern starter? The new Bendix will not fit, as it will not get past the flywheel. The solution? Take it off and replace it with the original style Bendix.

Had my original 49 starter rebuilt locally.

Rebuilding OEM starter was your best move.
No doubt about it, the original Ford Bendix starters are the best.
Plus, they are easy to convert to 12V, if desired. Read about it here:

As with many things in our modern world, new is not necessarily better

It will fit if you engage it then install it and say a few curse words at the same time.

Seems like I gave NAPA about 50 buck$ for a rebuilt 12 volt off a 292/312. Took all of 45 minutes to convert my old '49 starter

That's about right. Helps if you have a core to save the core charge.

Exactly! Simple job, great results and easy to most folks to accomplish.

If anyone needs a new 12V Y block armature, I have two that came from these conversions. Your's for the taking for the cost of shipping.

By using the 12v fields do you get a higher cranking starter, i have asked a starter guy and told you can't make a 6v a heavy duty. Mine just don't have that little bit extra they need when hot. All grds and cables are good.

I've occasionally had to run 12 volts to the 6 volt starter on my 52 Mercury and it spins over as fast as any modern vehicle. I've never considered it to be a problem running a six volt starter on 12 volts.

I ran my 6v starter on 12v since 1991. Bendix spring finally went out on teardown inspection found the brushes were shot. By the time I would have bought new bushings, brushes, etc for a complete rebuild it was more convenient to buy the 292/312 already rebuilt.

Rebuilt my starter, got a new old style bendix from Mac Van Pelt. US made too. Was worth the effort to import here rather than buy a possible piece of "crapolla" locally.

Needing some confirmation. Finding rebuilt Ford Galaxy 390 Starters at Rock Auto or Amazon. Plan to take to my local Generator Shop and let them do the swap 19fordy posted in post 2. Look the same as pic in the post. Just don't want to buy the wrong thing.

No idea if an FE starter is the same as a Y block starter. Curious how much they are on Rock Auto? At Napa, they are around $50. May be a better move to get it from Napa vs. taking a guess from a website pict.

Sidevalve8ba, That's the tread/instuctions I was talking about "first buy a new starter for a 1964 Ford Galaxie 390 V8 " Went to Napa online and the photos that came up were not anything like the photo 1 in the thread. Rock Auto photos looked the same with the long Rod sticking out with no gear on it. BBB Industries and Remy had exactly the same photo and priced $60-$67. I can go to Napa and ask them to look it up. Just don't want to get the wrong thing.

This is the one. Give them an old flathead starter for the core.

That’s perfect. Don’t have any bad old starters. Gives me something to look for at the next swap meet!
