Removing generator/starter pole shoe screws the easy way
I made a new video showing the rig I made for removing and installing generator/starter pole shoe screws. If you have ever worked on these, you know they are extremely tight and can be a bear to deal with. My rig makes it easy 😀

Re: Removing generator/starter pole shoe screws the easy way
Thanks for the video and very complete explanation of your whole process. One could easily setup a very similar jig using a hydraulic press. You've given me some great ideas - thanks!

Re: Removing generator/starter pole shoe screws the easy way
Another method if you don’t have a press , a hole is drill in the top that just fits the extension, several to fit both 3/8 and 1/2 along the length
The size on mine was decided by pre existing holes, if the threaded rods rub on the sides of the top piece it will hold itself up while moving generator, the double on the bottom makes it easy to hold in a vice, It’s made out of 4” u channel |

Re: Removing generator/starter pole shoe screws the easy way
Steve
I have a very "similar" tool in the works except made to fit my 20 ton shop press. THIS TOOL I shot pictures of and learned about it from the Van Pelts transmission class from back in September, same principle but made for the "de-tent" screw removal in shift towers. the smaller round shaft runs on a sealed bearing in the larger housing and use a big wrench on the hex of the screwdriver bit with a LITTLE helping down force of the shop press!!! |
