After blisteringly hot weather for the past week (up to 120F), today was refreshingly cool at about 85 - 90F. Celebrations in the gardens near Melbourne were fantastic. We attended in one of our Model As along with about 100 other cars of all makes (about a dozen Model As). Very tired now and ready for bed!

When America stopped accepting convicts, they were sent here, which was our first fleet.
They came by boat!
They landed very close to my photo and setup camp.
They had few skills and were very lucky to survive.

Up until a few years ago Sydney, on Australia Day, had a display called Wheels which was always good. However, this got moved to woop woop.

The very first person to ever shoot a kangaroo was an American.

Well, I can't let this one pass can I?



I realize Burner that you are probably far, far too young to remember the moon landing in '69?

However, as it is 50 years this year, I feel so utterly compelled to respond.

You see, those images of the first moon walk came via radio telescopes (dishes as we call them) here in Oz, picking up the transmissions from the moon.

We also had the world expert on radar here, who taught you Americans about radar in a "transfer of technology" (where have I heard that before?).

He went on to become the expert in radio telescopes, and there was another "transfer of technology" from Australia to the US.
His name was Edward "Taffy" Bowen. He setup a dish here at Parkes that opened in 1961. Funding came from the Carnegie Corporation, the Rockefeller Institute, and the other half from the Australian government.

Not only that, NASA setup three tracking stations here in the early 60's. One of these, a deep space tracking station, still operates.

In fact it has a nice cafe called the "Moon Rock Cafe" which is where we often go for a Sunday drive.

Near the cafe is an exhibition which tells the story of how Honeysuckle Creek tracking station beamed the first eight minutes of the moon walk to the world. After that Parkes took over. (Parkes were having high wind problems at the time, I gather)

Anyway, in a lonely corner of the car park of the cafe sitting unused, remains to this day the dish that transmitted those first eight minutes of images to the world.

In the years after WWII, the Poms, the Yanks and the Aussies jointly developed all sorts of rocketry and unmanned aircraft at Woomera. It laid the ground work for much of what is used today, particularly drones.
For our American friends, a woomer is a throwing stick used by the Australian Aboriginals to get longer range out of their spears. They never used bow and arrow - no suitable wood here for a bow.

As to my age...you're a little off mate. I remember the moon landing very very well, I even saved the newspaper (still have it), I also remember and have the paper (still have it) from when JFK got shot ('63), hell, I even remember Sputnik (you can look that one up).
I love Australia, my Aunt and Uncle lived there after the war, remember the war? It was in all the papers.
I too felt utterly compelled to respond and set the record straight.
Oh, and the kids in my profile pic are my grand kids...from several years ago.

😁 barkeep...get that man a Fosters.
Did alot of work with the Aussie pilots on their F-111's back in the day. Man-o-man could they drink...I could almost keep up with them...almost being the key word here.
