Rumble area inside panels
I've noticed that some of the covered panels that go inside the rumble area have a D shaped cutout on them and others do not. I have seen both of these configurations in parts catalogs. Can anyone explain why both are offered and why the D hole is there in the first place? Is any of this specific to a given year or model number?

Re: Rumble area inside panels
Mine have the D holes and they happen to line up perfectly with the rear body bolts.
Great place for my daughters to store candy wrappers apparently. |

Re: Rumble area inside panels
D-shaped cut out is a feature to help with installation and removal of the panel,

Re: Rumble area inside panels
It's my understanding the opening is for accessing the rear body bolt as the bodies were dropped onto the chassis at the factory.
Might be wrong on that, but I seem to recall that was the reason! |

Never gave it much thought.....now I think it's a hell-of-question, on any body style.
If the interior is done, how do you tighten the body bolts? |

The holes in the panels I installed line up with the lath that the panels are screwed to, could it possibly be used as a passenger hand hold?

Here is a pic from my web site. Yes, the bodies were fully trimmed before being dropped on the chassis. There had to be access to the body bolt holes!

Re: Rumble area inside panels
I just am in the process of pulling a 29 roadster body with rumble seat. I wish it had the cutouts! The front seat back rest is attached to the upper trim strip then tied to the center stringer. I had to untie it, swing it up as the repo panels in the trunk fit in beside it. Then had to slide both of them out to get to the rear mounting bolts. Of course they have been wet and are warped. I wont go into the fact that the carpet in the rumble seat area was glued down!
