I think the "nub" is a left over feature from pre-war Lincoln Zephyr production. Some of the Zephyrs with factory installed Columbias had shift forks with the sticking out part removable. I think the nub was where a bolt was used to hold things together.

If the adjustment you made fixes the problem it sounds like you were not getting full opening of the shift valve. Please let us know if that did fix the problem.

Weather is still good here, so I'll be driving the wheels off it till the snow flies. I didn't suspect the valve since it shifted in low without hesitation. It could be that shifting to low has less resistance then shifting to high and the main control valve was on the fringe of being out of adjustment. Time will tell.
