Re: flathead engine stand
If it is a UNIVERSAL engine stand I don't see why it wouldn't.

Re: flathead engine stand
I was always told you should never hang a flathead by bellhousing bolts as the casting is not strong enough and you should only hang it from the exhaust ports.

Mike I may have a extra one but will have to see if I still have it . You need to get the KR Wilson flathead engine lift too to make things easier

Re: flathead engine stand
Do NOT bolt a pre 1949 Ford V-8 engine to an engine stand buy the cast bellhousing.
Not safe. May break the cast iron. 1949-53 there is no problem. |

This subject is just like seat belts though, I wouldn't recommend any particular method for hanging a block or attaching belts. |

Re: flathead engine stand
The One above belongs to Neil "Biggles" Bennet. It's built to very high spec. I know Neil. He was able to repair it. Re the red one, who's to say it happened recently? It probably happened a while ago and the block was dumped in a corner. It could have had plenty of time to rust. I always use a side mount. Mart.

Re: flathead engine stand
Interesting on how thin the casting looks.
Have the tool to check but no block to check.

Re: flathead engine stand
It is thin, I current have a block that had the bell housing area busted sometime in the past and repaired. Whoever did the repair did a good job! But the broken area is much smaller than the photos posted. A look at the thickness in the bell area should convince you it might not be a good idea to hang a lot of weight off of it. In addition to the thin material, the bell move the center of gravity of the block out several inches from the mounting point.
Like a lot of things, folks have been doing it for years and getting away with it, in fact I would guess breaking one is fairly rare. But, even a small chance of a catastrophe would keep me from taking the chance. It is fairly easy to fabricate a mount, I made one using a flat plate to bolt to the existing plate on the stand. Welded a piece on angle to it and the a smaller plate the correct shape to match the exhaust bolt pattern. You can use an exhaust manifold for the hole pattern. Re: flathead engine stand
Like JSeery above I, too, took advantage of the natural 45 degrees formed when using a piece of angle iron.
Next time you happen across a couple of foot length of heavy angle iron you should be saying to yourself "Ooh! Flatty side mount!". |

Re: flathead engine stand
This is what you need, a proper Engine Stand, built especially for the Flathead Ford V8 Engines. You get two of those side clamps, bolt one to each side of the Block then add the Engine to the Stand. Can't go wrong with this style Engine Stand. It is super strong and you can rotate the Engine into 4 positions and then Lock in place at the desired position. See Clamp on left, bottom photo. |

Re: flathead engine stand
^^ The one above is a nice sturdy unit. The only downside is that the deck surface is never horizontal which is better if trying to bore it.

A good bench with casters. Factory engines were built up vertically not on a engine stand. All operations were done that way. The plus is, we have a roll away bench which is always busy doing other work. I then built a top of oh 20 gauge with a lip and a drain hole in the middle bucket underneath for cleaning etc. Only cost was the casters hardware store the rest lumber we had from other jobs.. Not new idea I saw the engine line on Yo-tube back when.... |

Re: flathead engine stand
Many thanks for the suggestions. If i buy a flat head side mount is one enough or do you mount one both sides of the engine. Thanks

Re: flathead engine stand
I just ordered one from Stumpy’s last week. It showed up in less than a week. Got my spare flathead mounted to the stand with it today. Pretty happy with it. For those of you using this style mount how hard is it to flip the motor over on the stand? One man or two man job?

Re: flathead engine stand
One man job. Does it have a hole for a bar to go through? I use a 30" bar on mine and can turn it over. It's a bit heavy when fully built but still do-able.
