Our new Baby...
FIL just delivered one of his cars to us...(yes best wife & father-in-law ever)
Not sure on the details yet, he had a 29 & 31, and sold one and gave us the other. I thanked him and asked when he would be down to help be get it fired up. But here in Chicago, it's too cold out to play right now, so it will sit til spring. I've never been an "Old Car Guy"...but seeing this in my garage has me like a little school girl waiting to see Taylor Swift. Pictures are old from when they were in the storage garage: |

Re: Our new Baby...
That is a nice 29 for sure. These cars love the cold. Make sure you have antifreeze in the radiator. If not drain out a gallon and add a gallon. That will protect your car this winter. Just changed out a cracked head for a friend who didn't add it and it froze and cracked the head.

Re: Our new Baby...
thats a nice looking car. open the fuel petcock before putting in gas. if it is by chance stuck it is easier to fix when empty. if their is gas drain it and put in new ethanol free gas. check the oil and maybe change it. charge the battery/buy a new one. i like to disconnect the battery when im not enjoying my car. since you are probably new to this the starting procedure is : turn the gav(choke knob) one turn out. i put about 1/4 throttle on the right hand control. set your left control to bottom of advance, make sure your in neutral. i put the parking brake on to prevent the car from lurching if i was in gear. push the starter. on mine i pull the choke all the way closed for just a second at a time once started i flutter the choke for about 20 sec till the engine is warm enough to idle properly. then you turn in the gav all the way tight then back out to 1/4.

Re: Our new Baby...
Look in the door pockets for the Owner's Manual. It has a lot of good information.
There are about 4 more books every A owner should have. The parking brake on the right of the gear shift means this would be a mid to late 29 car. Very nice Coupe you have. |

Great looking car and don't let the cold keep you back. Just keep it away from the salt! Wayne
P.s. When starting, Make sure the spark lever is at the top and not the bottom as suggested! Last edited by C26Pinelake; 12-30-2015 at 01:39 PM. |

Looks like a real nice ride! Welcome to the Barn! And definitely don't forget to add the antifreeze. I also know someone who cracked a head because of that.

Re: Our new Baby...
Very nice indeed, very nice father-in-law also.
I gave my son-in-law my shovel head Harley when it got to the point I could no longer ride and enjoy it (it beat the hell out of my body after about twenty miles)

Nice to see another Chicago based Model A owner. Whereabouts are you in Chicago? I am in Andersonville, and own a 1931 Tudor. Welcome, and don't forget to join the Illinois Region MARC , we have meetings the first Tuesday of every month!

Re: Our new Baby...
Dm, nice looking coupe . As always with acquisitions from one owner to the next there are learning experiences and things to fix. From looking at your open door photo if the dash it looks like the gas gauge has/ is leaking from the dark staining around it
It can be easily fixed but make sure the fuel level is far below the gauge before you attempt repair. You can search on the forum or ask and we can give some good advice on it for you . Yes it can wait until spring , just make sure the fuel level is below the gauge for now . Congratulations . You will have great fun and experience with it . Get hooked up with the local model a group. There are some good seasoned guys up your way including the Ron and Ken Ehrenhofer, Mark Maron and more to guide you Larry Shepard |

Re: Our new Baby...
Yeah I didnt know about the gav on the choke. It took some reading to figure out why my car was back firing while accelerating and didnt want to climb hills. and im probably lucky I didnt do any damage because I had no temp gauge at the time.

Re: Our new Baby...
Hey, Mitch, thanks. That owners manual taught me a bit more about starting and driving my baby.

Re: Our new Baby...
Welcome, there are a lot of Model A folks around Chicago. A good parts place is Antique Engine in Skokie, they do engine builds but also carry parts. Nice folks to deal with.
