Default 1936 ford headlight/horn rod.

How is the rod fixed to the pot metal horn button assembly on top? I'm planning on shortning one and it is tempting to do it in horn button end. Thanks.

It is somehow attached to the pot metal, "crimped over"? I doubt it can be done, but I have never tried it.

I can honestly say the dog did it. I had a 36 horn rod with as nice and straight rod as you will ever see leaning against the wall in my shop. My dainty little 190 pound (86kg) dog ran into it and the rod snapped off from the horn rod when it fell. The rod is still nice and straight, but I do not see a good way to reattach it and still have continuity. If you are going to shorten one and still want to have continuity, I see no easy solution.

The best way to shorten a horn rod is to cut it in half and remove the length you want to get rid of. Then SILVER SOLDER it back together. It is plenty strong and a friend of mine just did one for me. Shortened a '36 Rod to fit a '34 Ford stock column length. CAUTION be sure to be careful to mark it vertically at the cut so you can index it to the proper rotation before soldering it back together. Also, the length is CRITICAL if you want it to still operate your light switch and horn button, and have the proper spring tension so that the horn button assy at the top sits down into the steering wheel opening properly. Measure 36 times and cut once, on this deal. If you try to take it apart at the top you will probably have a disaster on your hands. Happy slic'in and Dice'in. SIR DUCE
