Default Speedometer Problem

A couple of days ago, I noticed the speedometer in my 28 Phaeton swinging wildly between 0 to 30 as I was first driving out my gravel driveway slowly in first gear. By the time I got to the paved road (about two tenths of a mile) and increasing my speed with pressure on the gas pedal , the speedometer smoothed out and held speed whether I had my foot on the accelerator or was just coasting. Any ideas why this may be happening? Lubrication?? Need new cable? Just need to warm up? Thanks in advance! Regards Ahooga

Mine did the same thing earlier this year, wasn't acted up sense. If it continues then it'll be time for repairs! Probably with the speedometer head, dried grease my guess.

My vote is for a dry speedometer cable. I would first remove the cable from the liner casing and use a light grease (-or heavy oil) and coat the entire cable before reinserting it into the casing.

Brent, I have a Mitchell Overdrive. How does that effect the Greasing of the speedometer cable

Thanks

I lube my Mitchell speedo cable by separating the Mitchell extension from the stock cable to ensure the lube gets past the union. I do use graphite in both.

Thank You Blockhead. Do you pull the Cable out from the Speedometer First -- do you have to remove the Speedometer body from the Dash plate? Hugh

First I disconnect from the Mitchell cable extension. Then disconnect the cable from the speedo and pull the inner cable out enough the drip some speedo lube with graphite into the cable. You don't want so much lube it is dripping out the other end. The carrier fluid will evaporate, leaving just the graphite. No need to remove the Speedometer body from the Dash plate. I lube the Mitchell cable the same way then reconnect.
