Carb backfire when release accelerator

Now that the weather is nice, and the widows are down, I recently experienced an issue and looking to the experts. While accelerating, when I release the gas to shift from 1-2 or 2-3, I'm getting a pop or backfire from the carb. If I go real easy on the accelerator, and release at a low RPM during shifts, it doesn't do it, but it seems when I do try to accelerate harder to keep up with traffic and release for my shifts, I get the pop/backfire. I tried adjusting the timing while driving and no difference, but could it be I'm running too lean on the GAV?

Sounds like you might be to rich. If you accelerate hard you are pulling in more vacuum
which is pulling in more gas which is not being totally burned. Also you might want to pull your spark plugs to see if they are burning clean.

I hate to ask this, but is the car timed backwards? Mine was when I bought it...

I'll try turning the GAV CCW back to increase.. When I first bought it I didn't notice it but then thinking about it, after numerous posts, I spun it several times Clockwise to bring to a "zero" point, then back off. Good news was at the Zero point (hard stop) it just about stalled so I knew it did work and just didn't spin arbitrarily. Will let you know results.

Instead of timing it with the handle up, it was timed with the handle down.
