Do you have a 4 cylinder rearend? I have read they are longer than the V8 rear.

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
Of course, yes, 4 cyl driveshft is shorter to allow for the longer 4 cyl engine. I believe the rear mount is similar but fitted the other way around so the ears stick forward.

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
Here is the said crank and pulley.
I machined off the outside pulley from the twin pulley set unmade a nice thick washer, cut down the bolt and shortened the crankshaft to suit. Lawrie |

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
Note: When I've done this, I've NOT had to shorten the crankshaft - I just cut the "U" off of the top of the spring bolt piece. I don't believe you'll need to shorten the crank if you do that and have the correct water pump spacers/mounts.

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
Lawrie, Mart Thank you. Huge help with understanding I'm not out of my mind... :-) Thank you to everyone else as well. I hate when I get to a point like this, it saps the motivation when I have no idea how to deal with it.
Mart, Are you Mart from Mart garage? If so love your youtube. I gave me the initial confidence to start this project. Last edited by GRAZIOLI; 11-02-2023 at 06:45 AM. Reason: updated info |

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
I'm out of realm of knowledge here but '33-'34's had different length torque tubes for V8 and 4 cylinder engines. Is it possible he's using the longer of the two and would benefit from using the shorter?

Lawrie, Thank you for the advice. did both. Still have an issue with the water pump hoses and clearance with the front cross member. Do I need to but a modified front cross member in order to fit this engine in this truck? see photos. If I need a new front cross member, any advice on where to find the one I need? If I just need to raise the engine mounts will that effect performance? what would I use to raise it? Last edited by GRAZIOLI; 11-05-2023 at 01:07 PM. Reason: new info |

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
It doesn't appear that you've cut the spring mount, nor found the right front pulley? I believe this thread has given you all the information you need - is there something that is confusing you at this point. You mentioned that you 'did both' - the pictures you show don't show anything of the sort?
In addition to the right pulley and trimming of the U-bolt pad, you still need to get the U-bend spacers that hold the front of the engine up and also fix the misalignment of the motor mount bolts versus the water pump holes. These U-bends are about 1 1/2" or so tall. I can measure the ones that came out of my 34 if need be - and take pics. Without the spacers, the water pump inlets will be too low, and the bolt holes won't align with the motor mounts and water pumps. |

Hey graziola,
I’m in NC too, east of Raleigh in Smithfield. I’m building same, 34 pickup with 59a engine and my drivetrain is all sorted out and bolted to the frame with all previous mods/adapters/spacers etc. send me a message if you live nearby or will be in the area so you can see how it all goes together on my project. |

Re: '46 v8 to long to fit '34 truck frame?
It appears in the photo that you are using straight lower radiator hose, and it clears the front crossmember nicely. However, the two that I've done, the motor sits with the hose outlet at the pump just slightly lower than the crossmember, and the solution there is using a lower hose made for the 8ba's that have a slight offset to them.
Your crank center line seems to line up with the u bolt pad and crank hole, correct, but I used a model A u bolt pad, thinner I believe. As mentioned before, it will get so close that its hard to change the fan belt. |
