Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
I was fortunate to see the whole collection prior to the 2005 Western National and also prior to his first liquidation/sell off. It was quite the collection for sure!! I have plenty of photos from that trip

Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
I saw the complete collection in '05 also . Ron hosted a BBQ at his place for the V-8ers attending the Western National Meet. A very impressive collection and most cars were original and not restored. Ron Thorne is a very nice guy and a real gentleman.

Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
Rock, I drove a tan '37 Ford Club Coupe. There were several of us from the California Bay Area that year. It was a great meet (actually all of them are great fun).

Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
Those are some nice cars for sure. One thing I did notice was that the air cleaner isn't positioned correctly on the 1934 Victoria.

Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
The $150 charge just to be a non-winning online bidder sure is a scam. Yes, I know other major auction houses do the same.

The bidder's registration fee keeps it real for serious bidders only. Nothing about the Ron Thorne collection is less than first class.

Re: The Ron Thorne Collection
Not sure I agree. There is the registration fee of $150 from everyone and then there is the consignment fees on the back end if you win a bid. Asking money just to join is a money grab in my opinion and just a way to get more cash from anyone who "walks" in the door.

If being a shill is a business, that $150 ain't going to stop them if they can make a tidy profit. I'm of the opinion that all of these reality and non-stop Barret-Jackson auction shows are only feeding this crazy notion. I know others may not agree, but the 20-25% consignment fee and other related fees the auction houses charge should leave plenty of meat on the bone for them to make their money. They don't need it on the back of interested parties. |

A "serious bidder" is going to be willing to pay whatever their own personal maximum is, regardless of whether other "serious bidders" or non-serious bidders caused it to be reached. Everyone is looking for a bargain, even "serious bidders". Shills hired by the auction company aren't going to be affected by the registration fee or a proof-of-funds requirement. Charging $150 just for the "pleasure" of bidding from one's home computer is just a money grab.

Auctions are a business that serves a need, and they are very good at what they do. They have a magnetism that turns spectators into bidders, and they use every tool at their disposal to do exactly that. Shills are a reality in the business of auctions and for that matter, in the business of sales of all manner of products from snake oil to real estate.
