Default Hub/Drum Separation

Any pointers for separating the rear hub and drum on the style that the hub is on the outside of the drum ? The Hubs are good shape but the drums need replacement. Thanks for any tips.

I just did this last month. Yes, it is a lot easier that you think.

Purchase a 5/8" hole saw bit. I'd recommend Milwaukee. The Blu-Mol didn't last the entire job.

Slide the bit over old studs

Squirt some type of cutting oil over the studs.

Drill for approx. 1/16"-1/8" of an inch. Check as you drill down. You should see a pig tail of the old swedge material spin out from around the stud. Once you do, move on to the next one.

Once you remove all the swedging, the stud may fall out, need some gentle encouragement or a BFH to knock them out.

Once the studs are out, the hub is free.

When you are ready, DM me and I'll give the modern, serrated stud part #'s and other bits of info to put them back together.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is.

It took me less than 30 minutes to do four hubs.

I usually just torch the heads off the studs and drive them out from the inside; easier than using a swage cutter on this style and you don't have to worry about cutting too deep into the flange.

But...…...what are you going to replace it with? And, make sure you put some kind of support under each stud BEFORE whanging with the BFH. Real easy way to bend the flange without that support! DD

My drums were junk so I did not find it necessary. Once the swedge was cut away, stud was just "hung up" One hit freed it. My hubs spun totally true. Key is to ensure you got the swedging out.

With this style hub, the stud and the drum below are taking the stress. The hub is really floating at this point. Once swedge is freed, it's not holding the hub any longer.

If you look closely at the stud at the 6:00 position, you can see the swedge ring around the stud.
