Super 97 carb tips?
Hi guys, purchased a triple carb manifold and new super 97 carbs to run on my warmed over 8ba. having some tuning problems . We are using progressive linkage using a primary and two secondary carbs and have adjusted as per directions .at low driving speed we are experiencing a rich condition and several times we have flooded the engine with a lifted or stuck float. We are going to check out the primary carb to make sure the float is adjusted properly and there is not dirt or junk in it.
Our fuel pressure is adjusted to 3-4 pounds. We have been told that we might want to change out the needle valve. Any one have any a experience with these carbs!. Thanks for helping. |

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
Do they recommend that fuel pressure (3-4lbs)? Seems a little high, normally use 2.5-3.0lbs.

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
dg,
Get a Holley low pressure regulator from SPEEDWAY their #427-12804, the chrome plated OFFY dial reg ain't so good. 2 1/2-3# is good. Be sure the needle in each seat is steel and lightly tap each needle into the brass inlet to 'seat it'. Set the floats so the free end is slightly lower than the hinge end when the needle is seated. If your floats are of the phenolic type I'd suggest disposing of them and installing brass floats. I'm extremely happy when someone has had good luck with these carbs, my experience has not been such. That being said do not assume the power valves are sealing as they should or that the gasket faces for the 3 lower plugs or the power valve are square with the threads. The primary carb can be run by itself of course but the secondarys without the idle circuits will always be problematic unless your secondarys still have the idle circuits. You will prevail and make these carbs work....I'm sure of that......however leave no stone unturned in the quest eg. check actual jet size etc don't think you have #45's because that is what is stamped on them. The Speedway carbs come with a crude, less than perfect grose jet, as opposed to needle/seats. Yes, they do come with plastic floats. The ones I've seen have a suspicious red sealer around the jet plugs and they're a bugger to remove. Then, only to find out the jets are unmarked. I've never been a believer in "secondary" carbs; idle circuits and chokeplates are absolutely necessary. But remember, 9 out of 10 Chinese hotrodders can't be wrong.

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
After reading all of this I would have to assume the Super 97's are manufactured (maybe even designed) in China. Would much rather have an original.

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
Sal, your on the button. Only original Stromberg 97's and the New English Stromberg 97 should be considered if you want to run 97's. That speedway 9super7 is a nasty copy. Sure there cheaper than the English one, but the reason is plain and clear, Charlie and Max cover the issues above.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
Yes the carbs are the speedway brand, I have not given up on them yet. Live and learn ! At this point I have an original stromberg 97 as the primary and the speedway carbs just as secondary. Seems ok but would like to have them match. |

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
After you get a couple more good carbs you will find the performance is far better with straight linkage.

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
Dont buy them...thats the best tip. See if you can return them....buy some original cores and send them with your center carb to uncle max with engine specs.he we set them up. You will have about the same invested and they will work.

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
Can you give the 9super7's the naval flotation test? (Per Bruce Lancaster)
And, I think 9 out of 10 Chinese hot rodders could be Wong. |

Re: Super 97 carb tips?
I'd be afraid that with the plastic foam float and the aluminum base, the test might not be reliable...and a false positive would be a disaster!
