I ran across a 24 stud block with L2101 cast into the back of the block. Can anyone help narrow this down? According to Van Peldt it is an 8ba, going by the water jacket casting holes

Well, it is very easy to tell an 8ba from a 59ab!

To help clear matters up, the black block with 'bolt-on' bellhousing is an "8BA" type. The blue block with the cast-in half-bell housing is a "59A" type....both blocks utilizing 24-stud heads. DD

There was life before the 59a also. 99 and the 81a comes to mind. There are a lot of markings on blocks, some mean something some don't.

....and then there's the French FH block, which coopman doesn't show, that has characteristics of both the 59 & 8ba series blocks.

It's likely that any time someone "runs across" a French block, you're gonna be informed that it's a "$French$" block! Le moteur Francais, below! DD
