Electric Wipers Question

I am installing electric wipers on my 48. I have it installed but do not like the retainer clip & spring used to hold the linkage arms to the motor. Looks micky to me. Hate to have to remove the dash to repair it later on. Has anyone had an issue with this? I am contemplating replacing the clip with cotter keys. Look forward to your comments.

Whose elec wipers do you have? I'm considering that mod but don't want a micky setup.

I gave up a long time ago and dont go out in the rain.
I just use rainex.
It is now too painful to work upside down under the dash

Paul: Mine were made by Vintique Inc. They look fine except for the retainer. Slowforty: I don't leave the garage when it is raining but sometimes one gets caught. I don't like working upside down either. That's why the dash is out.

If you don't plan on driving in the rain, and use Rainex just in case, I would stick with good old Trico original type motors. I would contact Kent at "Clean Sweep in Redmond OR. He rebuilt the one in my '40 and works great. he knows his stuff.

I have one from Bob Drake, it was a terrible install because the mount wasn't right. I had to cut it up and re-weld it.
The piece that goes on the end of the motor shaft is a PIA for me as the bolts that the wiper transmission arms attach to will NOT stay tight. I have not been out in the rain, and hope to not get caught out.
p.s. The right wiper moves considerably less distance the the driver side does.

I've had that type of retainer/spring/clip on several cars and have never had a problem. Just don't stretch the spring out of shape and it will work just fine.

Thanks 1937hemi. I think I will leave it as is. Will run it a few times before I put the dash in just for peace of mind.

I purchased mine from Newport Engineering 25 years ago. Never had an issue and it works great. Used the OEM style connector. https://newportwipers.com

Yup, I installed a 12 volt motor in my 47... that retainer clip, though small & unusual - does the job.. install it and leave it alone.. the original was still in my old wiper when I pulled it out.. came apart ONLY after I had to yank on it to disconnect the arms..

My wipers function flawlessly! I hope that helps!

Newport engineering best way to go. Bolt in no modify. Others seem to be a copy of Newport but sometime you have to play with them a bit.

I've talked with the New Port folks and was impressed as they are professional engineers, not just good seat of the pants fabricators. Were I you I'd talk with them and be assured firstly that you do NOT have their product and secondly, if they have something inexpensive to add on to your motors to make them reliable. Or worst case, sell yours and buy a New Port which as the postser attest, has the perponderance of users here, hopefully for a reason. (I tend to go with the herd to find the best stuff.)

You might want to at least call Newport and talk to them. They might be able to make one up if they have a car to work with. In the old days they used to develop there new products that way. 33 / 34 Fords are popular years, I’m surprised that they don’t already have something.

I have Newports's in my 48 (12 volts). They work very good. I put them in a long time ago so don't remember any problems installing if there were any. I have their set up in two other cars. They work good also. No particular install problems on the other two, although the dash was out on the 56 Bird.
