Default 1936 hood hinge rod removal, whats the trick?

i want to separate the hood top from the hood side, so i need to slide out the long rods/pins that hold the two together. very stubborn to do.

i've only managed to slide it out about 1/4 of an inch. the rod can only come out one way because of the front curve of the hood, that also make it impossible to use a punch very long as it begins to hit the hinge barrel and i don't want to bend things up. any great tips i should know about? thank you, kurt.

Lots of penetrating oil and vise grip pliers on the 1/4" of the rod available rotating back and forth letting the oil do its work and eventually the rod will commence its exit from the hinge.

If its straight like a 33 or 34, once its out a small bit, hook a battery drill up to it and as David says, lots of lube or oil on it.

I've used a piece of brass brazing rod, ~ 3/16" diameter, to drive them out from front to back. First apply some light weight oil on the full length of the hinge and let it soak in. Using the brass rod, and medium size hammer, tap on the rod until it comes a few inches out the back of hinge. Then chuck a 3/4" variable speed reversing drill on the exposed part of the hinge rod and slowly turn the rod ccw and pull out on it at the same time. If it should stop coming out, reverse the drill and turn the rod in a cw direction as you continue pulling out on the rod. Repeat procedure until rod is completely out of the hinge.

I was a bit slow posting this...I started before David and Lawrie had made their posts, but they finished and posted theirs before I could

wow, the drill motor's good idea. it's almost out enough for that now. i bent a 3/16 punch to follow the curve of the front of the hood to get it that far. i've just been using wd-40 to get it to move so far. back to it, thanks.

NOT WD40. Use a high quality rust penetrant. WD40 is a water displacement chemical - not much help for your issue with the hood rod.

it's apart! drill / oil, curved punch was the trick. i know wd40 is not the best, but i wanted to control where it went with the small red tube it comes with. thanks to all.
