steering gear box questions
I got my steering box apart it was full of grease, i have done this before on my 37 ford pickup because of leaking into the light harness with mobil 1 synthetic grease and it actually steered much better. That said however i am putting a new needle housing on this gear box to eliminate the bushing since it has needle bearings and a seal the steering shaft is good and it was tight with the bushings so i see no issue does anybody do this and when you do can i just use the 600w or is grease better?

Re: steering gear box questions
Oil But there will be other views! They make a steering gear end plate but only for two tooth unit.,prevents oil from leaking.

Re: steering gear box questions
I have always used the grease, but then it has been 50+ years since I rebuilt a steering box and I don't plan to do the one I have now, so if you can find a seal that will not allow oil to leak into the switch, hey, go for it. There have been great breakthroughs in seals in 50 years.
Bill, nice delivery.

FWIW, I haven't heard any favourable comments about the needle beraing conversion, only negative.

Re: steering gear box questions
I rebuilt the 7-tooth steering box on our 1928 Tudor last winter. I could not find one of the clever oil retainer tubes to fit my particular setup. I did not want to use grease as that was what was in the box when I tore it down. A lot more rust than lubricant.
The seal I found at several vendors appears to be an ineffectual piece of felt. In its place I installed a rubber/fabric washer designed for a water tap stem. It has not lost a drip in several hundred miles of city driving. Unfortunately I cannot give any hint as to what make or model of tap as it came from a box of generic washers bought some thirty or more years ago. |
