Smile 1948 mercury trim emblem question

Hi everyone,

I have a stock, black 48 Mercury convertible. The MERCURY emblem just above the grill has a black background behind the chrome MERCURY letters. I have noticed that some 48 Mercurys have a red background. Were both colors used depending upon the exterior color? Were 46, 47,48 different.

Just curious. Would like to have mine whatever is correct for 48 models. Thanks to Ford Barn members for all of the questions I have had with my Merc. It sure is a great car!

Black is correct for 47 and 48. Red is correct for 46.

Here is a close up picture of the Grille on the Canadian Mercury 114. (Called the 114 as it was built on a 114" wheelbase) These Mercury 114 models were based on the same year Fords. While it still looks like a Mercury, no Grille part will interchange with the regular Mercury that was built on a 118" wheelbase. On these Mercurys, the rear bumper was also used on the front, as it was not pointed like the regular Mercurys.
