Smile 1941-1948 ford mercury gravel shield question

Most 41-48 Fords and Mercurys have rubber gravel shields on the lower rear fenders ahead of the wheels. Some have stainless steel gravel shields. Did some models have the stainless shields from the factory? Were they a Ford option or just an aftermarket part sold by local parts stores?

I have a 48 Merc. convertible and I am just curious.

Thanks!
Bill in Conn.

Pat, Sal is correct. The cars were not delivered from the factory with the gravel shields. Not sure if this was a dealer offered part or a part from suppliers such as J.C. Whitney etc.

The parts book referred to the rubber guards as a fender boots but only the rubber ones are listed in the parts books.

We all may have different names for things but I call the rubber on the front side of the rear fenders rock shields and the gravel shield is attached to the rear of the car between the trunk/rear fenders and the rear bumper. There is no mention of anything other than rubber as rotowrench mentioned.

Those "chrome" shields were sold as a "dress up" item at places such as JC Whitney. I bought good quality rubber "stone guards" at C&G . They also sell the stainless guards. Regular part number51A-16349/50A. The stainless have a suffix of "SS".

My personal choice is the original rubber ones. I just don't like the chrome or stainless ones. It's a personal choice.
