How to buy an AOD or c4
Hi, my fordomatic may run for a good while yet but I'm considering replacements for it. Its heavy, primitive, shakes like Elvis at red lights etc. Whats the best way to buy a rebuilt transmission? Had a guy tell me that replacing a fordomatic with an AOD really brought his 53 to life. I don't guess the blower hurt his drive-ability any either. Who is the go to guy within 1000 miles of Dallas?
Thanks, Bill |

Love the AODs, but they may be a little hard to adapt.

c4 adapters are out there like Flat-O-Matic. It would'nt be overdrive but would be reliable and easy to get parts for. Most automatic cars already have a pretty low rear axle number so still should be very drivable. Automatic OD may need a controler and some wiring in with sensors that a C4 wouldn't.

There are adapters out there for flat-to-AOD, in fact I think it's the same one? Depends what the AOD came out of. You want one out of a 5.0 vehicle, and not the AOD-E which has an electronic controller. The later year, the better, and one from a bigger, heavier car is better. They got heavier OD servos and bands. What ever you get, setting up the throttle valve linkage or cable (preferred) is essential, or you will burn it up quickly.

I think the AOD is a great choice fir an automatic trans. The early ones have a lock uo converted and machanical speedometer, so it's a bolt in. Speedway makes one. It even uses the late started but you have to clearance the block alittle to uz it.

If you don't need an overdrive, the way to go in my opinion. |

Re: How to buy an AOD or c4
The old X type transmissions can be rebuilt since new parts are still available. The hard parts like the case, torque converter, shafting, Etc are another story. You have to do some serious searching to find good hard parts. When properly adjusted, the old turds work pretty well but are a lot like a 2-speed the way they were designed. I know only one person that knows how to work on them down here but his dad was the one that really had experience with them and he is gone now. I haven't checked around much since I sold the last car I had with a medium case cast iron cruise-O.
