Squeal Noise under Hood
When the engine idles all is quiet. When I give it more gas in place it begins to squeal under the hood. I can't tell where it is coming from. It is not super loud but loud enough to hear easily. It seems to get louder with more rpm. When I reduce the engine RPM back to idle it quiets down. Now for the fun part--- when I push down on the driver side front fender the squeal goes away. When I pull up on the passenger front fender it quiets down. What is happening? Any ideas how to fix. Fan belt is tight, generator pulley is quiet, noise is not in engine. Help!

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Even though you say it's not in the engine, and I can't explain the fender thing, I suspect it is the fan belt. Get some fan belt dressing and squirt it on and see what happens. I've heard Ivory soap will work too.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
take the belt off and try it
then move onto the sheetmetal if it continues Last edited by Mitch//pa; 05-13-2015 at 05:24 AM. |

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Try candle wax on the fan belt and on the hood welting....it's not a long term solution but it may isolate the noise...

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Try using a stethoscope to probe the fender mounting bolts and other possible sources of the squeak.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
I had something similiar in my 30 ccpu. It seemed to come from the splash shield /rear of running board area. It drove me crazy for a long time. I found that the sheet metal under the front seat that formed the box the seat springs sat on had a crack in the rear corner drivers side. I didn't want to weld it up at the time so I sistered a small piece of sheet metal under neath the crack with some JB weld and flexed the crack to accept some JB weld in the small separation. All is quiet and after 4 years still going strong. At a certain engine speed the vibration was just right to create the squeal sound. I never would have thought it was a crack in some sheet metal.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Tom is right, I had exactly the same problem and tightened the fender irons. Fixed it.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
I had a similar noise and it turned out to be the springs on the front motor mounts. They get dry and it sounds like a high pitched squeal in the area of the generator.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Along with the front mount springs, the mount , itself, where it goes through the frame sometimes rubs a bit, so grease the flange, bolt and washer, if you use one.

Any ideas how to fix.
Out of the Box Fix: Often noticed that none of us like to admit our shortcomings as we age. But my best guess for trying a Quick Fix is: Drive to your local supermarket in your Model A, and ask a person about 18-25 years old to listen for a squeal under your hood. Wouldn't cost a dime, and you would save lots of time and money on trying to go out to buy belt dressing, Ivory soap, lubricating oil, welting, etc. |

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
What Ray and Ron said in # 9 and 10. Also make sure the crank pulley isn't rubbing. On a customer's rebuilt engine with an occasional squeal I oiled the front mount springs and pulley area. It turned out to be the person that rebuilt the engine didn't grease the cam plunger, and it took about 5 hours of running before the squeal stopped for good.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
TIP # 171: IF you ever suspect a squeeling belt, mist it with water or Windex, it'll go away, momentarily. DON'T use belt dressings or GOOP, you'll be SOOOORRRRRY! Either adjust it or replace it.

Re: Squeal Noise under Hood
Oil the distributor shaft. There is a little cap on the side.
