Re: Cracked head- pic
I had the same crack, used it as an excuse to get a 5.5 head back in 2015. 4 years later the engine needed a babbit job. Rebuilder said it would have needed it either way though. With a known good bottom end 6:1 is a no brainer.

Re: Cracked head- pic
This may go without saying, but less spark advance (timing) is needed with a higher compression head. If a person runs with the timing lever in the same position as before, he will pound out the Babbitt from detonation.

Re: Cracked head- pic
UPDATE:
Have a new cam on the way, manifold, lifters, guides, gaskets, head, head bolts and a lot of related items all here. Oil pump is done and ready to go. What should have been a quick head gasket and adjust valves job has turned into all this...

Re: Cracked head- pic
Everyone seems so excited about the high compression heads. If you don't have a lot of hills to climb, why to you need them. I have had two of these original "B" high compression heads and both of them ended up having leaking head gaskets. I would guess that they also put more stress on your rod bearings. I often ask, how fast do you really want to go in a Model A? I know, I am the white haired guy holding up traffic! Ed
