Military school rifle range competition. Stepped out for a minute and heard the news. Went back and told the coach "The president has just been shot ". He said "That is not funny ". "No, it's the truth ". Moments later the news came over the PA. Not knowing I had just stepped outside, he looked at me in amazement.

I was a Lieutenant in the USN in an Airborne Early Warning Training Unit and we were immediately put on alert to launch (not our normal task) if necessary. I had only arrived a few days before and my wife and I were in temporary quarters and when I wasn't at the NAS we were glued to the radio.

Yeah, I'm old, but wiser than I was then! LOL

There were 4 of us sitting in a 1956 Buick Special that had been "slightly modified". We were parked on County Street in NewBedford Mass listening to WBZ radio out of Boston waiting to go to class at NewBedford Institute of Technology. The first comment by one of the guys who was in the reserves was "Oh shit we are going to go to war with someone" and he immediately left. We never made it to class that day!

I may not remember what I did yesterday but some things are clear

I remember standing near the stove in Moms kitchen in Winnipeg Manitoba,
Wondering why Mom was crying.
All the neighborhoodladies came over and started talking about the President being killed. He had to be the most popular President to Canadians too.

I had just come out of an auto parts store. When I started VW bug there was church music on instead of the rock and roll that was on when I went in. About 10 seconds later they broke into the music to say the President had been shot in Dallas. I was on the way to pick up my future wife at high school. What a somber day. Seems like yesterday.

I was in high school . . . rumors were going around about it during the afternoon . . . the last hour of the day, they tuned the school intercom system to a radio station and just let it play. He was the first president that I really connected with, so to speak. Of course Truman and Eisenhower were there, but I wasn't "politically" aware of things when they were the presidents. I put leaflets on doors for Kennedy during his campaign. Looking how things went during his presidency, well that's a mixed bag . . . some things he did OK but he made some big mistakes too. Now there is a great "mystique" about him because he died so young and his presidency was so short and unfinished. He may have turned out to be one of our great president . . or maybe not, we will never know. This week, there have been several great PBS programs about his death, Oswald, and the whole Kennedy history.

I was in my second grade schoolroom.Somebody came in and told the teacher,(no such things as PA systems there). The teacher tried to get the TV to work, but it would only work if the weather was clear.Somebody had a radio,so all the teachers huddled in the hall listening to it and crying. We probably couldn't quite understand what was going on,but when all the teachers in the school were crying(there were four of them) it had to be serious.I do remember the kids all behaving perfectly that day.I can also remember one of my uncles punching a guys lights out when he cheered the event.

I was 19 and on our way through No. Carolina to Virginia. We didn't ride with the radio on, so we didn't find out, until we stopped in Richmond. We saw headlines saying that Kennedy as shot and disregarded them as a joke taken too far. All through the south in those years, Kennedy was hated and we saw much evidence of it. I recall one bumper sticker saying "Nixon For President! Kennedy for King" Finally, after our second or third newspaper, we realized it was no joke. I wish we had him today!

In Grindavick, Iceland at the Naval Communications transmitter site. We just could not believe the news. Being in the Navy (ETN3) at the time and the previous year having the Cuban Missile Crisis under our belt, we were very worried as to what would happen next. Have the complete newswire teletype printout of the incident as was sent out on that day by UPI.

Was in 5 th grade just finished our show and tell of what was going on in our life and had just told the class how my dad had walked outside of his business the day before and that president Kennedy's motorcade had stopped in front of his store and how my dad had gotten to shake his hand. My dad was so proud the day before and so sad like all of us were at the horror of the next days event.
He had come to Tampa the day before he went to Dallas.
Years later we all were thank for the fact that the shooting did not occur here. It would have been so much of a trauma for Tampa or any place then . We were such a smaller city at the time and had even less resources than Dallas had at the time to deal with the events of that sad day.

In 5th grade when word of the shooting came out. All classes were moved to the church where we prayed for the President. We were then dismissed to walk home - no busses and moms were always home in those days. Learned of his death when I got home.

I remember the TV was on constantly for three days as we watched all the events unfold.

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton Cal. waiting to be deployed to Vietnam. When the news came in we were put on alert, issued ammunition and stood guard at the headquarters of the camp. When I heard the news I was sitting in a dentist chair, I remember the male assistant instantly with tears in his eyes explaining the news to the doc. wasn't a good day for sure.

High school. They brought everyone to the auditorium for the announcement. I've never believed the Warren report, doubt the remaining 1,100 documents will ever be released or that the truth will ever be released.

I was in an attic installing telephone service when I heard the Lady of the house scream!! I came out of the attic to see what was the problem. The Lady was crying and shaking ...unable to stand. The television was showing the event over and over. After calling her daughter to come over to care for her mother , I was able to finish my work. THE HOUSE WAS ON LIBERTY COURT!!

Fifth Grade at St. Francis DeSales school when the pricipal anounced it on the intercom. Then we were discharged from school.
I can remember sitting on the soffa with my father and witnessed Ruby shooting Oswald a few days later...

I was stationed at Dow AFB Maine... I was a crew member on B-52 and we had been in the air for about 4 hrs on a 24hr mission during "Operation Chrome Dome" carrying nuclear weapons... Mission was to be a staple of deterrence at the peak of the Cold War. At times, 12 armed bombers were aloft at any given moment.

I was a part-time sales clerk at Penny's when I heard about the assassination. Two redneck management suits overheard me express some regret over a president being assassinated and bid me to hit the road.

I walked less than 100 feet to Sears where I had also applied for part-time holiday employment and mentioned the circumstances to them and immediately began work there. So, on the afternoon of 11/22/63, I was working for both Penny's and Sears!

I was in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ault (DD-698), we were operating off the coast of Mayport FL at the time. We proceeded directly to port in Mayport, FL to wait further orders. I was an EN2 at the time and had 10 days to go on my enlistment.

I was in 10th grade biology, Homestead,FL. Our teacher announced that the President had been shot. The guy sitting behind me said "Good, I hope he's dead!" That still bothers me. I told a friend who lived in MS. and he said they cheered.
Hopefully things have changed

I was a senior in High School study hall when the announcement came over the p.a. system. I remember that LBJ declared the 23rd as a National Day of Mourning. The funeral was on the 25th and, in the meantime, there was 24/7 radio and television coverage of all of the events leading up to the funeral. All still rather vivid in my mind.
Funny how almost everyone remembers.

I was a freshman at San Diego State University, in one of my classes. They quickly dismissed the whole school to allow everyone to go home. Watched on TV in stunned silence, along with the family. A day to never forget!!

I wasn't born yet. I appreciate all you guys sharing your stories and expressing how the basic mindset of the country was so fixed on that day like 9/11 was. It was an event that changed lives and the course of history.

I was driving East on West State street about 2 blocks East of Follett's Purdue West Bookstore in West Lafayette, Ind. I was not a fan of Kennedy at the time but I remember being profoundly sad at this news and I was in something like a state of shock that this had actually happened in the America that I loved.

It is weird I am told I knew what was going on but I have no memory of that time except a floating memory of my mother crying but I can't be sure if it was the assassination or not.

I was sitting on a stool at the local Telephone company switchboard placing long distance calls. When he was shot the switchboard lit up like a Christmas tree. The crew had an impossible task trying to process all the long distance call requests. Then all of a sudden the switchboards went quiet. It was at that moment we all realized he was gone.

I can remember it like it was yesterday.Drafting class my senior year Lancaster,Ohio high school. The teacher Mr.Clover was out of the class room and we were working on asignments. He was kinda comical guy and when he came in the classroom and told us the news strangely every one burst into laughter,he slammed the door shut and did not come back that day and it finally sunk into us I guess. I remember going home it was a beautifull sunny day in Ohio as was a week later when we had a day off from school in honor of the funeral,it was a very warm beautifull day for late November or early Dec. I would watch TV and then go outside and work on my 58 Ford 6 cyl.

I was at my desk in the dorms in my senior year at Univ. of Pennsylvania, big jock banged on the door, "turn your radio on". Turned it on and listened, hoping against all hope that the President was alive. Walter Cronkite said it finally. The campus melted as it mourned. The entire school waived mid terms and I believe all of our final exams were not even read by the profs. Went home for the TV coverage of the funeral. It was for the PENN community the end of an era.

Seventh grade in the school library at Hooper Alexander elementary school in Decatur, GA. Its amazing that we can each recall exactly where we were and what we were involved in when first hearing of this event some fifty years ago. That evening, my father and I took a drive to East Point (south Atlanta) in my father's '31 sport coupe - on the way back the fan broke off and went through the radiator. It was my father's 44th birthday and we didn't get back home until after 9:00 that evening. Sometimes it seems like only last week ...

We were put on full alert because nobody new what was go on. That night the German citizen started bring Flowers until after the funnel and were gathering at the front gate to show their sympathy. I think that the Germans had a lot of respect for JFK. Richard/Ca

I was a field service rep for an aerospace division of Bell & Howell located in Pasadena, California. One of our marketing reps had asked me the day before to take him to the USMC Air Station, Santa Ana, California about 40 miles away. About 10 AM California time the morning of the 22nd we passed thought the front gate and had proceeded to the radar installation area where we were to do business. We entered a Quonset hut to obtain a pass to proceed further. It immediately struck me odd when I noticed a group of Marine NCO's standing around watching soap operas on TV. Before long I realized something serious was going on. They were not watching soap operas, they were watching Walter Cronkite announcing President John F. Kennedy has just died.

A very sad day.

I was teaching at OU as a grad student in Norman, OK, and was grading papers as I waited for my wife to get off work so we could drive to Dallas. She called to say that a salesman came in with the wild story that Kennedy had been shot, and would I turn on the TV to check it out. Only regular broadcasting was on, so I left the TV on just in case. Then, wham, regular broadcasting was interrupted with the news that Kennedy had been shot.

Speaking of aircraft, my father was a ball turret gunner on a B17; KIA March 9, 1945.

Married, first child (daughter), bought a small house and sold my 1929 Model A pick-up for $ 150.00 dollars. Wow, to only realize that part of ones life.

It seems each American generation has a national tragedy occur that marks their lives forever, freezing their memories of what they were doing at the exact moment they heard about it. These memories are still crystal clear in their minds decades later, while they may not remember what they had for breakfast today. For my grandparents' era, it was probably hearing about the "Lusitania" being sunk while America was still officially a neutral country in WWI, for my parents' generation is was Pearl Harbor. For my generation it was undoubtedly JFK's assassination. For Gen-X it will most certainly be 9/11. God only knows what horrible event will occur in the future that will become the seminal moment in the lives of grade school children today.
Not much to look forward to anymore, is there? More of the same cr*p going on around the world right now that will somehow end up being "our fault" - and we'll be made to pay for it. The terrorists in the world are not going to simply go away one fine day and become peaceful citizens. They'll be still be affecting the lives of everyone reading this message for as long as we live. As Will Rogers once quipped - "The future ain't what it used to be."

At home studying for english class at Victorville, Ca. junior college. Once the shock wore off I inscribed the date and time in my college dictionary inside cover. Grew up a little bit faster that day.

I was at work near Boston on the drafting board drawing up parts for a voiceprint analyzer for the CIA. All work came to a halt and we left early for home heartbroken after getting the news right after lunch. I drove the 60 miles home by myself with the radio on to hear the news and the speed on the pike was noticeably down from 70 plus to around 45mph with some people stopped by the side of the road I presume to hear the latest news. I remember I was driving a 62 Ford Galaxie XL convertible which I thought was pretty sharp but it lost it's luster that day. The country hasn't been the same since and now when I see a 62 Galaxie at a show it jogs my memory.

THAT'S for darn sure. In answer to the original post, sitting on the far right side of 4th Grade behind Linda and Bobby (still recall where we all sat don't know why, all thru grade school. Small farming town). Principal came into room, stopped the class told what had happened. I was too young to really take it all in. Same as the Cuban Missile Crisis in '62, didn't have a clue how close we came to WWIII until MANY years later. They called off school the day of the funeral. Older brother and I were playing outside, Pop made us come in and watch funeral on TV, we whined and complained so much he couldn't hear the TV so he sent us back outside to play!

Electronics Technician 3r Class at Grindavick, Iceland on the Naval Communications transmitter site there. Have the complete Wire service teletype messages of the event that were sent out on the air on a roll of teletype paper. What a sad day. Never will forget it.

I was in a Freshman Engineering class at San Diego State University, and already had my first Model A, a 1930 standard coupe. I remember they dismissed all of the students that morning and we all went home, and watched coverage on what was tv then. The other very traumatic event hat occurred during that era was the Cuban Missile Crisis. That was a very scary time, as a lot of folks thought we were likely to get in a nuclear war with Russia...very, very scary.........

I was 20 yrs old and in the US Army stationed in Germany. I was visiting some guys in another barracks when the News flash came over someone radio. I think everyone said "oh Sh*# at the same time. I was on the Unit Police we had the whole base on lock down. And everybody was put on full Alard. The German people were in shock but many of them brought flowers and left them at the front gate. I and two other men had to the honors of raising the post flag and then lowering it to half staff for 30 days.
