Default Gas Cap Question

My Town Sedan has run fine using the gas cap which came with it until recently. I know the cap has been on it at least since 1968, so I believe it is an original. The gasket was badly deteriorated, so I replaced it recently. The cap then did not vent. I made sure the gasket did not block the small hole near the rim, and had clearance around the center part with the lugs. It still did not vent. I soaked it in carburetor cleaner, with no improvement. As the picture (my first attempt) may show, it has a vent hole near the rim, but no hole in the center. Because of the vent hole, I have assumed that it is not a radiator cap, but I see no way for the center to vent. Is it really a radiator cap, or is there another problem?

Looks to be a radiator cap. The vent hole should be towards the out side of the center section. The old cracked gasket was probably allowing the cap to vent? I know others will have more to say.

It's a radiator cap, no question about it.

Not a orginial cap but maybe a early replacement.[western auto] , Looks like a spin off of a Mid to Late STANT cap but that has 1 rivet dead center.

Thanks to all of you. You have confirmed my suspicions. The vent hole near the edge threw me. I guess I'm off to Berts for a new Eaton style gas cap.

I think repro caps for Model A's have been around since 1928...age means nothing. There was always a significant market for cheaper-than-Ford parts filled by the Pep-Boys style stores.
