Default blasting

The cost of blasting is like everything else going thru the roof. I got a price of $60. per Model A wheel. Is that about normal?

I bought a large blast cabinet from Skat Blast. That way I can blast what I want, when I want. It’s been very handy and I use it for lots of things.

The sandblasters here charge more if the wheels have been powder coated as it is a lot harder to remove than paint.

I have an Ingersoll Rand 185 Diesel powered compressor. I can blast one Model A wheel in 20 minutes. I use the Dustless water blaster and it really kicks ass. I was wondering about the price because I suddenly became very popular.

Depends on where you live.

They wanted $60 a wheel here in NJ a bunch of years ago. People were doing it for $30 a wheel in the south where peoples time is undervalued which can be profitable for some. But that is another story.

Between cost of the tools, time it takes to do it right, and just how nasty blasting is I would say $60 is cheap.

Depending on the paint, I found I saved a lot of time by letting each wheel go in a electrolytic rust removal tank. This removed some of the paint and a bunch of the rust. This significantly reduced the time blasting.

If you plan to use powder coat you should talk to the company doing the powder coating. The company that did my wheels said they would blast any wheels that had been blasted by another company. Apparently they didn't want to gamble on how long it had been since they were blasted and if they had been contaminated by handling.

Powder coating requires the metal to be absolutely clean. After I blast mine, I wrap them in a plastic trash bag and take them imediately to the powder man. I just finished blasting 19 inch wheels. Took 20 minutes each and 2 fifty pound bags each wheel of crushed glass.

Is it possible to burn off the paint or powder coating before blasting? Or would this destroy any metallurgical properties the wheels may have, or warp them?

Here in so. cal I found a company called LINCO INDUSTRIES,INC located in Anaheim. They do chemical stripping, blasting and plating. I had a '30 hood that had been painted and had minor fire bubbling, surface rust. I was happy to pay $75. I was very pleased with the work, turnaround and friendly attitude for such a small job. They specialize in wheel repair. Ask for Dean 714 635-2800

Try doing a wheel in a hobbyist blast cabinet….
You’ll pay $60 in a heartbeat.
Oldred has a 185 which would
Run a decent outside pot.
Buying 60# fine sand a tractor supply is $11. A wheel would take a minimum of a bag per wheel maybe two
Agree with Kevin you’ll find $50 palatable in the end

Do NOT use sand for 'sand'blasting, it will cause silicosis...

After extensive research I also bought a cabinet from Skat Blast and it really is top quality. It comes all put together too PLUS they advertise in either MAFCA or MARC magazine (can't remember which) which supports our hobby.

I highly recommend Skat Blast for anyone looking for a blast cabinet. I use it all the time.

Good comment to those that don’t have such

Another off topic point to make is many use the term sandblasting as a blanket term to cover any type of abrasive blasting. Most people are using coal slag these days.
