55 crown power window motor
A couple of my power motors have slowed down. I rebuilt 2 myself as best i could but one continues to go slower and slower. Macs used to sell these new but now show as "temporarily unavailable". Any thoughts as to whom else might carry these?? No one locally will rebuild them for me, and i'm tired of dealing with this so i think new would be best unless there is another option.
Thanks- Christopher |

Re: 55 crown power window motor
I’m running a 12 volt system in a 55 bird, with 12 volt motors. 3 years ago I pulled the whole window system out, replaced the rollers, whiskers, etc, and lubed and aligned everything. Made them move a lot smoother and faster. Still not speed demons like modern cars.
If the motor is still working, I’d look at the mechanical side before I blamed the motor. Might also check the relay connections for corrosion, doesn’t take much to drop 6 volts to 4.5-5 volts |

Re: 55 crown power window motor
I've already take it all apart when i did the motor, cleaned and regressed rollers etc which is why is thinking replacement now. What and where is the relay? is it the black box in the door panel or located somewhere else?

Re: 55 crown power window motor
x2 on dmsfrr’s comment on the ground. I added the power windows to my car, and when I built the harness I took a ground wire out. When I rewire an old car, I take grounds everywhere, and put in ground bars. Rust and corrosion can be a real problem when depending on the body/chassis as the grounding route.
Also, the window rollers on my car were too worn to just grease. I had to replace them. |

Re: 55 crown power window motor
Hi All, i gave up diagnosing this and took it to a professional. They confirmed that it is indeed the relay itself. I thought someone on here mentioned that they had one for sale, but i can't find that now.
I'm also interested if anyone can recommend a brand or where to look for one. NOS/OEM preferred but beggars can't be choosers. They also confirmed that my voltage regular is toast - so if there are recommendations for those, i'm all ears! thanks - Christopher |

Re: 55 crown power window motor
Since the relay is out of sight it shouldn't matter if it isn't orignal. On my 55 Crown I replaced all the window relays with aftermarket units. I also converted to 12 volts. Try Google for 6 volt relays or 12 volt if you upgrade voltage. The ones I got were in a plastic case and were about 1.5 inches square but had a much better amp rating than the originals. Trouble free after about 6 years.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
If your 55 is still 6v, convert to 12v; that will really speed up those 6v window motors.
I converted my 55 Tbird to 12v but retained the 6v window motors. The windows are dangerously fast now. |

Re: 55 crown power window motor
I have the 6v motors, relays and the window regulators out of my '55 Merc I'll sell. PM me if interested. Yeah, keep your fingers and other appendages out of the way when raising the windows, they're very fast and have a lot of force on 12 volts.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
I'm definitely planning on keeping my system 6 volt. I'll look into the modern aftermarket replacements - I think I saw a couple in my google searches.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
I went with the Nu-Relics system for my car, but it has been converted to 12v. I did quite a bit of research before buying. Nu-Relics beats the others hands down IMO. I'm not aware of any aftermarket replacements that are 6 volt.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
FWIW, I didn’t know Nu-Relics had systems for our cars. But I put a set from them in an OT car 15+ years ago and it’s still working fine.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
Yup, they have 'em. In fact they're the only outfit I found that service the quarter windows for our hardtops and convertibles. The hardest part of the installation was getting the quarter windows out and back in. The rear seat and all the trim has to come out, and the whole window mechanism is mounted on plates that bolt to the body. They're a very tight fit. I used up every bad word I know and had to resort to inventing some new ones. But I'm very happy with the result.

Re: 55 crown power window motor
Same story with my OT convertible. More bad word and bigger hammers. But they worked, and still do.
