Default Head Surfacing Mill Setup

Good Evening All;

Would someone please send me or post some pictures of the setup on a milling machine for surfacing of a head.

Thanks in advance

Dick

Try this.

One of the better machines....Very fast and accurate.
Several versions.

You didn't say what kind of head ---but the principle is the same ---this is on 4 "123" blocks, stud and nut through 2 sparkplug holes to tie it diwn

This would be for a Model A head.

Without knowing what fixturing you have it is hard to tell you what to use----are you trying to setup to do many "A" heads, or just one----I still would try the "123" blocks under the bolt bosses and tie it down through the plug holes---sometimes I have to use feeler gauges for adjustment shims in the setup ----if you want to do many of the same heads you would make a plate with fixed jacking screws, another machine I have has clamping arms that grab the sides of the head to hold it ----the beauty of the Bridgeport is that it can be used to make it's own fixtures

[QUOTE=Kurt in NJ;746246] ----if you want to do many of the same heads you would make a plate with fixed jacking screws

As Kurt suggests is what I have. A base plate with 4 threaded studs that match the bolt pattern of the head. Two spark plug holes are used to secure the head to the jig/support.
It is surprizing how much varience there is in the heads...I'm constantly adjusting the nuts on the threaded studs to allow the head to rest on all four supports.

I have an adjustable fly cutter that will surface the entire width of the head in one pass. I typically take .004" at each pass until close and then finish with a .002" cut.

I am away from the shop at the moment. I will post a couple photos late today of the support jig.
Good Day!

Thanks Dave and the others. I am going to resurface only one head or two at the most. The machine belongs to a friend of mine and is a machine of Taiwanese origin. I still have to check to see if it even has enough travel to machine a head.
