Default Interchange info for banjo rear

I'm aware of some of the different widths.(got wider in '42-'48) What are the can and can't do when it comes to changing bells from year to year? I've got what I think is a 37 center with internals and axles and want to put 36 bells on. Is there a difference in the bearing sizes? Thanks in advance

TomT here - I am working with Dave on this and we could use some help. Basically we have 37 axles, open drive center from a 42-47 truck, and 36 bells. Seems the 36 bells will not seat to the center section properly - any difference in the 36 vs 37 axles? They are the same length but are the center bearings in a different position? Different size?

Thanks for any help you can give ....

I put 36 bells on a 40 center. I think you use the later side bearings. You should be fine with either axles.

This link should be of some help to you. No help here for open drive, however.

What Andy said, the '35-6 bearings and races are a narrower profile than the later. Choose whichever direction you want and match bearings and races on carrier and housing.

I put together a rear using 1946 Merc 3.54 drive shaft/pinion (one piece) and carrier/center section with 1936 bells, 1937 axles and spider gears. Use the 1935/6 carrier bearings... It set up with one set of gaskets.

Karl, you probably meant the '39 axle/spider? '35 through '38 were the same.

Thanks, gents - now we know we need 35-36 axles and spiders to go with those bells ...

I would use 1939-41 axles and spider gears, if that was what I had... Just not 1942-48- they're too long...
