Default 4" Crank In Pre War merc. Block

This project has set for ten years +. I have the valves in and adjusted. Next comes the Crank. My question to this board is ??? Do I need to know anything special to install the 4" Crank in this block. Have the bearings and will do this today.I have done this before but after many birthday partys I tend to miss a few things... Thanks I most likely need all the help I can get.

Drop in...use pulleys (on some late cranks you'll have to remove the little slinger sleeve as that is part of early pulleys) from Merc, also flywheel, and early main bearings. You can use either the floater earlt rods or the laocked late rods, and your block will need the appropriate seal holders for a rope seal crank...many prewars will have the ones for slinger type crank.

Don't forget to change the timing gear. The Merc crank gear is different that the 59A gear.

Depends which distributor you use.

Doesn't make any difference which set of gears you use with either distributor drive. Keep the back lash to a minimum. I've never seen a speck for this but .005 to .010" should work just fine. I just checked an 8BA abd it was .022" with no gasket. Now the only way to fix that is to install aspacer behind the distributor drive gear.
Be nice if someone could come up with some ford specs for this. Alwaysd use early gears in my engines.

I would use the early gears in an early engine just to keep me sane so I don't get confused later on. I ain't getting any younger for sure.

I would use the early gears when using the crab dist .The 8BA gears have the helix cut the opposite way.
