Default Early 28 brake equalizer shaft

Are there sprigs associated with the early 28 brake equalizer shaft(dogbone)?

Where does A2483 brake cross shaft socket springs (9/16” long; 7/16” diameter) go?

Pictures?

Where did you get the springs? What is the gauge of the wire?

Doesn't look like my shaft would hold a spring. Are my cross shafts no good?

The hole is 0.54 at each end.

The springs go inside the ball, i.e., hole on the left side of the lower picture above.

Correct. They keep the half shafts tensioned so that they don't move in and out.

I was fortunate, my springs were original and intact in the functioning brake equalizer (adding a dab of grease to them will keep them in place while installing). I don't know the wire gauge and cannot get to mine as they are installed. (I don't recall who i 'stole' the pictures from or i would give them credit)

One of mine was broken so I scrounged around for a replacement. Not positive but I think I cut down a valve spring from a Briggs and Stratton engine.

I finally got around to installing the above-mentioned springs. As suspected, there were no springs installed previously. They were a little bit of a pain to get into the U-Joint housing sockets but once in they definitely take out play and tighten everything up.

an FYI for the next time around.

if you need that spring in the end of the 1/2shaft. the one in the camshaft plunger is the same diameter, it just needs to be shortened. i think you can make 2 out of that one spring.

Ugly, Thanks or the tip. Now I’m just working on getting the correct cross shaft brackets.
