4 cycle, L head
I am not an expert on the Model A, but I do know more than the average bear. I have owned three A's, and presently have a 1931 standard coupe and an unassembled 1931 standard roadster. However, I am ignorant of the designation: L head. DeAngelis uses this term and I have seen other references to it. Does the L refer to the arrangement of the cylinders, the shape of the block, etc? I have no clue and would appreciate someone educating me. Thank you in advance.

Re: 4 cycle, L head
It has to do with the relationship of the valves with respect to the piston/connecting rod. Picture the piston/rod in a vertical position with the both valves to the side and top of the piston travel. sort of like this:
________ l l l l l Or an upside down L. An F head has one valve (usually exhaust) to the side and middle with the intake at the top (usually overhead). Hope that helps. Frank l |

Re: 4 cycle, L head
And a T block would have intake valves on one side of the piston, and exhaust valves on the other side. That's a T valve arrangement, and not the Model T Ford.

Frank, Tom, Pooch, and Patrick: Thank you all for your input to my question. They were all very good answers. I am no longer ignorant; at least in this matter.
