Gas Tank Restoration
Is there anyone currently restoring gas tanks. Mine has old sealant that has started to come off due to corn gas and rust.

Re: Gas Tank Restoration
e paintModel a tanks have baffles SO cut outs have to made to sandblast all interior areas. After sandblasted cutouts are welded back in,and sealer is installed. Then it is baked in an oven which destroys the paint. They then properly sand and primer. Their business card states Lifetme NO RUST Warranty. You then must have tank painted.

Re: Gas Tank Restoration
The problem is getting the sealer out. Because of the baffles, unless you cut it open, you'll never be sure you've got it all out.

I won't say my method is better than theirs, only that my method is probably a little more thorough (-since we can access & see 100% of the inside of the tank) ...and with my method, it is "more undetectable" when the tank is completely restored. As far as "not having the time to do them", like everything else going on in this world, we have such a backlog of 'other stuff' to do that the turn-around is longer than what most people want to wait. When folks start complaining about the length of time it is taking, then the easiest way to reduce my stress is to no longer offer that service. If someone is willing to wait, we have been, -and will continue to restore them. |

Re: Gas Tank Restoration
I was able to melt the sealer, by filling the tank with acetone and letting it sit for a few days.

Re: Gas Tank Restoration
I have had a number of tanks restored by Brents shop including my own car. He does an excellent job. I have seen the shop and procedure first hand, and it won't get any better.
If the car is worth it, it is worth the wait.
