Default Ryan Overdrive

I just bought a 1931 wide bed steel top Model A Pickup Truck with a Ryan Overdrive. No info with it. Don't know if it's 23% or33%. Serial No. A9-0592. Would appreciate any and all info and or service manual/installation data. Thanks, Grant Sauder

Since your serial # has no "L" in it, that means it is a 33@ ratio. All 23% Ryan overdrives has a serial # that began with AL.

Grant - I don't have information on the Ryan Overdrive. However, would it be possible to put the truck on jacks, remove the spark plugs, and put in high gear with the over-drive in overdrive. Then start counting revolutions of the engine crank and the rear wheels. I would think with a little mathmatics you could calculate the overdrive ratio.

Just an idea. Of course if someone could forward you the information from a manual or brochure; that would be best.

PS. Sorry Grant, I wasn't fast enough. Steve had the info.

I would hope that with a 33% O D that you are using 4.11 gears in R E. Otherwise it will be very high geared in O D & not be very practical unless you have around 80 HP to pull the taller gearing.

I know people that use 26% od with 3:54 and even 3:27 ring and pinions. The guy running the 3:54 with od is using a stock motor besides a high comp head, and he says it works beautifully. I'm not saying this combination would be ideal in a 4 door, but in a coupe/pickup I wouldn't be worried to use it. The worst you'll have to do is downshift, but your cruising speed should be easily 65-70.

Because the pickup is a light Model A you should have no problem with the 33%. My phaeton has run a 33% overdrive since the 1970s with out a problem. Have about 60,000 miles on it with the overdrive.
