Default First Retirement Project Completed

I finally had the time to work on my cars as I would like. It took six months from finding a 39 block(a crate full of parts), shipping it, finding the pieces one by one where ever I could and rebuilding the motor.

I could not lay it on an old tire so, custom stand and full dash with stewart warner gauges to see how she runs. This project shows how to waste a lot of time and money, but enjoy every minute of it.

P.S. It is a spare engine, everyone needs one of those!

Joe what a great looking engine and killer engine stand. If the rest of the project turns out like this it will be beautiful. I have found after retirement the busier I am the more I spend and throw in the flatheads and the economy can't help but get better just from car guys.

Joe,
That is a fine looking setup. How did the engine run? Running the engine on a stand with no load is O K but keep the rpm's up there (2000) a lot of time. Not too much idling. Helps "seat" the rings. Very controversial with some guys. I have had no problems with 2-4 hours on the stand. Sure is nice to hear it run before you install it. Now, one final tip: we are supposed to call these things engines and not motors. Don't be surprised if Motor Trend magazine changes it's name to Engine Trend. LOL

Nice looking job Joe. Can I ask you a question? I see the heads on your engine have A in the middle. Did you ever find out if they were the right heads for a 39? I didn't think the 39 had A heads. I thought 40-1-2 had the A heads. Walt

My opinion, from what I could find, late 39 Mercury/Ford, 1940 and 1941 ford for sure. The A heads are correct sort of except for the temperature sending hole, no lip. I am still looking for the correct heads, but I had to hear her run. I probably waisted 5 weeks lookin for heads.

It saddens me to see such a beautiful engine stand. This can only lead to the destruction of a beautiful engine. A better engine stand would be an old tire and two guys holding it steady while you give it a SHORT test run

The engine stand looks like a modified sbc stand so no real loss. Har de har.On the serious side it was very well done.

It needs a seat, a steering wheel and V-8 badge.

Not to worry Ron, this engine is the original for my coupe. I had to put it somewhere. I do not know how long it will be on the stand. But just in case, I will start it every year or so.

Not from the finished engine. I rebuilt the engine on the exact same spot without an engine stand, just an old pallet it was shipped on. It does not leak a drop of anything, I am happy to say.
